Yes..a common topic...but Dish cannot make my system work anymore. The guys show up...put some parts on..crimp on new cable ends..maybe run a stretch or two of new cable..get some signal...and haul-ass...leaving me with some channels gone....a TV that don't pickup anything....and chronic signal loss display on the tube...then suddenly got signal and can watch the tube.

Fuck it! Dish net just ain't working out.

Is Direct TV any better??

Happy with Direct TV for over 10 years. Be sure to get the optional coverage on the box...had some go out over the years and were replaced overnight with new box.

Direct TV is better in my opinion then cable. Plus, dish (from what I hear)  doesn't have FX. That means no Sons of Anarchy, Wilfred, or Archer!

I have had Direct TV for about 10 years and have been completely satisfied.  I rarely lose signal and every time I have needed them (which has been rare) they were there in the time frame specified.  When I moved they came and installed the new equipment free of charge.  The poor guy was even doing it in the freezing rain w/out any complaints and was pretty social ( approximately 20 year old kid at that).

I have been with DirecTV since they were Primestar, probaly close to 20 years now. Best satellite provider IMHO.

OP: Sound like you dish is not aimed properly or partially blocked by something.

I've been with Dish for many years..probably ten years or better...but the service sucks the last year or so...

I figure Direct TV can't be any worse....and  that's pretty much that. Dish just cannot get the deal figured out...can't figure out which program package I'm paying for..or can't provide the channels I'm paying for..the techs can't make the system function properly and blame something else every time...this last time it's my house itself!! 'Dirty power'.."call the local power company or an electrician"..."you have 'dirty power'"..well I did..and the house passes muster as far as all the neutrals and grounds are doing their jobs...

I'm giving Direct TV a shot at it..really don't have a lot of choice 'cause I ain't wasting another day off work to watch a Dish tech fuck around and fuck around trying to make all the tv sets work at one time, then have me call the power company to come tell me it isn't so...pure bullshit.

Direct is coming Saturday to hook us up with new gears and we'll see how good or bad the service is..and if they will claim my house has dirty power!!

Years ago when I moved into my house I called Dish and was going to go with them for my satellite service. The Dish installer came out, got up on the roof and immediately came back down saying it was "impossible" to install a receiver on my roof and that I would never get a signal. He had me sign his form and he beat feet out of there. He was at my house all of ten minutes. The whole thing felt like "last install of the day and I don't feel like doing it". I was then thrust into the terrible and murky world of trying to get my deposit back from Dish. If I remember right it took weeks for that paperwork to be lost, found, lost again, found again and finally delivered to the apparently one and only person in the whole country who can authorize refunds to get my money back.

I called DirecTV a few weeks after my refund finally processed through and told them Dish said no dice and wanted to see what they had to say. The DirecTV installer came out and he spent a good 30 minutes up on the roof with some sort of gizmo taking a ton of measurements. When he came down he said he had no clue what the Dish guy was talking about as my roof has two spots to mount a receiver that have "excellent" reception with completely unobstructed sky views. He then proceeded to install the receiver and the cabling, doing a really nice job making sure to keep it all close to the house and as hidden as possible.

I've been running DirecTV to this day.

I have only had two issues to date. First my original HD DVR burned up. It was a slow HDD failure and it was tricky to nail down what was wrong. I called in and spoke with customer service on two or three occasions and they never were able to determine the problem. Finally it went tits up to enough of a degree that their remote diagnostics could see it and since I have a maintenance plan they sent me a replacement overnight along with a box to ship the broken unit back. The second incident was not DirecTV's fault, my lines going from the receiver on the roof into the house were vandalized by some little shit in the neighborhood. But DirecTV covered the repair under my maintenance plan and again I was zero out of pocket and they patched the lines fast and clean.

My receiver does have the occasional signal loss due to weather, but that's just par for the course with a satellite system and it generally only happens when it's pretty bad outside and lasts only until the dense stuff moves on. If I had to marshal a general complaint about DirecTV it would be that their DVR software is a little clunky. It could just be my older DVR unit but everything seems to run a half second behind the button presses and their menu system is overly complex for what you want to do. Everything feels like it takes two steps to accomplish what one step could do.

Dish still has FX but took out AMC not too long ago. My parents use dish at their place and I have directv at my apartment, they're both pretty decent. Directv is better in terms of channel lineup imo if you don't mind paying a little more than dish. Also i believe the viacom dispute between directv is solved since now I got back spike and comedy central.
