I set up my portable generator a honeywell 5500 (6875 serge) in my house like this.  I run a 10/4 flexable cord from gen to relanance inlet box.  Then 10/4 romex to a distrubition box where i split the 220 volts into two seperate 110 volt circutes.  i then ran 110 outlets to the fridge freezer in garage, to the direct tv box and tv and to another wall for lights ect. i also have a duplex in pantry for extra to run cords to other stuff if needed.  i simply plug in the cord to gen set and inlet box on house fire it up and then move the fridge plug from normal house outlet to gen outlet  and do this with what ever i want to hook up.  this way there is never power sent to normal house circute or back on lines.  I work for a power company and want to keep my power seperate for saftey.  this works great but alittle work to set it up.  My gen cord to inlet box is 50 ft long and i have run voltage drop checks and for now more what i am running with that size wire i have no voltage drop.  most watts i am running at one time if i run everything i need in a power outage is only 3000 watts and thats if everything kicks on at same time.
