My son needs a Asus restore CD for his laptop and I google the restore CD and found a torrent site the had the file to download (ASUS wants $50for the CD). Have you guys ever use a Torrent site? it it safe? Legal?

What is the 411 on Torrent?

Thanks,
 Bri

It's illegal.

You'll typically get busted if you seed (share).

If you are using it to get something that costs money for free, no it isn't legal.

I wouldn't get a system restore CD from a torrent.  There is no telling what some asshole may have added to it in terms of viruses and malware.  Just pay the $50 and get a legit copy and save yourself a huge headache.

Torrents are only good for 2 things:

Porn and viruses.

Sometimes they are one in the same.

Do you need the data on the laptop? or are you going to reinstall?

If you are going to reinstall look at ubuntu until you get the disk.   It is free, and can be loaded off of a DVD, CDs, or USB flash drive.   If you fill out the form, they will send you the software for free via the mail.

Just download the OEM disk straight from Microsoft; only thing is you'll have to call them to activate it, but it works! Just did it for my Lenovo and worked great.
