I love how people try to get you to do their yardwork for them. For Free.
Free Rail Road Ties Or this Free Firewood |
| I checked out CL free stuff a few years back and found the strangest ad..."Free Dirty Mattress on the curb...pics included." I thought, "Who would think someone wanted their nasty old mattress?" But, curiosity got the better of me and I clicked on the pic...of his ex wife. What an asshole. |

A suggestion/comment/whatever-since Craigslist items change so fast it's often better to take a screen capture and post that rather than a link to the Craigslist listing. |

That second one is pretty egregious. I see some pretty bad ones in the gigs section.
"Hey, I want someone to bring out a bunch of equipment and play music for my wedding. I won't pay you, but I'll give you lots of good reviews and recommend you to my friends." Are you kidding me? |

We had a old safe, in the back of the shop that came with the building. It was roughly 38" square and stood 48" high and was on rollers. The lock was broke and the old building owners used it to store paper work. When we remodeled the back room it was decided to get rid of the damn thing. Owner called all the local scrap iron places and they didn't want it, but they would take it for free if we delivered it to their business. So after a bit of discussion we said fuck it, and rolled the safe out on to the sidewalk in front of the store. Put a large sign that said, "FOR SALE $100". Three hours later a guy walked in asking about the safe, wanted to know if $100 was firm or could we do better. Owner acted like he was thinking it over a bit, then said, "Hell, the lock is broken so it ain't worth much, you load it yourself and you can have it for free." The guy said he would be right back, and a few minutes later him and a couple of his buddies loaded it up. The guy was tickled as hell to get it for free, and we were happy to get rid of it. |

I had no idea that there was a free section there. I've never actually read through all of the categories. Just stick to the casual encounters sections huh?? I actually just recently found out that that was on there as well. I think I saw it on TV somewhere. I stick to the for sale section.

That actually makes sense to me. Might as well see if anyone wants to move it before it's destroyed. |

I called on a "free firewood" ad from craigslist...
And it turned out to be a "cut my trees down, and you can take the wood" situation. We have actually done well with the free stuff... Someone was getting rid of their sandbox nearby, and I took my kids over on a Saturday afternoon, with a half-dozen empty large buckets that we had, and filled up my kids sandbox... Just enough work for them to make them think that they owned their work, and it cost me zilch... And another one from only a couple miles away, "free firewood." Thought it was another ripoff. Turned out an old single lady who had an adult child who worked at a saw mill and she had mountains and mountains of firewood. Real firewood. She got it for free and had mountains of it, and had no problem giving it away free when she realized that there was absolutely no way she was going to use it... Now we have a small hill of firewood in our back yard, and a source for more stuff... Amid all the bs, there are some gems... |
