Is this a good gift idea for a 6yo?

I'm not sure if something like this would be better than maybe a kindle fire.  Hive thoughts?

i have the 3DS and i like it,  but not sure how durable it would be in the hands of a 6 yo.  YMMV.

What exactly is the use of having 2 screens on them?

get one for the kid; it's got to be better than something he'd have to read.

One is touch sensative. During a game one screen usually is the main display screen while the other displays menus, stats etc.

BTW a new version of the 3ds with a bigger screen and better batt is coming out soon

My six year old daughter has a 3ds and she does just fine with it.  She's had a regular DS since she was about 4 1/2 after she stole my wifes DS for herself.  THe biggest problem for me was the games and the stylus are small enough that she has lost some of them.  Get a good carrying case for the games to go along with it.

Yeah, six year olds love them.  Make sure you get some Nerf armor.  It has saved ours many times.

My sons have DSi's with the mod chip. Great for book reader (touchscreen is fun), movie player, music player, surfs the web (with a wifi connection), has a Paint program, list goes on and on.

Let me know if you want some links to the modchips that are easiest to install.

ETA: I use them almost as much as my sons, as it's a great cheap book reader.

I highly recommend getting him Mario Kart. It's a fantastic game that always holds up.

ETA: To get an idea, I'm 24, started playing Mario Kart on the SNES when I was 5 or so.

This plus a million. My youngest son busted two of them before we figured this part out.

My 5yo loves playing mariokart on his 3ds. That's really the only game he likes on it though.  Most of the other games he has tried have been too advanced for him. YMMV

My kid has had one since she was about 4.  She got a new 3DS for Christmas and wants more games for it for her birthday. She's going to be 17.
