Well Folks, the fires you have been reading about here (Colorado/Wyoming/South Dakota)
have hit home for me. My wife (US Forest Service) has been called up to help fight fires. This is a women who has deployed to the desert 6 times ( yea, she eats’ it up) and this is just another thing that she "has" to do (she did say that she wished that she had her M4). I guess that this kind of work is as close to "combat" as a civilian can get. I have heard reports of "people" cracking up as to what needs to be done. Lack of knowlege/disciplane can and will cause problems. Let me say that what I've mentioned in the above is not the "Firefighters", but some of the support personnel. Those folks have lived to long in the lap of luxury, with not having to do what needs to be done. Hopefully, this will cause those that are not up to the "TASK" to be removed from their positions. And, I give my prayers for those from the 143rd Airlift Wing, North Carolina Air National Guard (maybe I have the unit wrong) for giving their lives to fighting these fires. |

I went to Forestry school.
I had friends that became "smokejumpers" out west. Not a job for the feint of heart. Parachuting INTO a raging wildfire is not my idea of fun. From what I remember they were alone for alot of it - and had many close calls with fastmovers and canopy flashovers. Make sure she carries her emergency blankets. Good luck to her.... |
