[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Red Tails... (Page 1 of 2)

Is a pretty damn good movie so far, good enough in fact that I can forgive the bad CGI aerodynamics

George Lucas needs to stop directing and writing movies and just stick to running ILM and milking Star Wars until he kicks the bucket.
Spielberg or Ridley Scott should have been in charge of Redtails... somebody who actually would have wrangled real aircraft wherever possible, done proper CGI only when necessary, and maybe cracked a history book somewhere along the way. |

The movie wasn't bad but it wasn't that great. George Lucas had way too much say in this. You could tell exactly what parts he had influence over. For example, the opening scene in the movie where the two pilots are talking. They sound like storm troopers talking. I can't comment on the action scenes. The theater had no bass for whatever reason so everything sounded wimpy. For me, that's 90% of action scenes.

Watched it last night. The CGI wasn't the greatest but it wasn't half-bad. The little fuckin 360* flip the Nazi pilot does is fucking ridiculous - and not in a good way.
Overall, I would say 5/10 and that's only because of Terence Howard's lines in the movie. Otherwise, it'd be a 3.5-4/10. |

Not disagreeing with any of that, But...P-51s |

I went with my Dad to see it at the dollar theater several months ago. My Dad likes most war movies...not this one, and I agree. It was bad and predictable. Of course it was predictable, its a remake of "The Tuskegee Airmen", that like saying "The Titanic" was predictable, Theres only so much you can do with a remake. |

Not disagreeing with any of that, But...P-51s If it ain't live it ain't shit. I'm a 3D artist... to misquote Sinatra, I get no thrill from CGI. Battle of Britain, Memphis Belle and Tora Tora Tora were much more impressive. There was no excuse for the amount or ridiculous CGI in that movie. When you have a $100 million + budget, P-51s and movie-experienced pilots are a dime a dozen. There are something like a dozen airworthy B-17s and you don't even need that many. There are even airworthy Bf-109s and Fw-190s if you really want to make it happen. Even though the Redtails never faced them, there are even flying 100% accurate replica Me-262s available. With those live assets, the only thing you would need to CG together is possible color timing, compositing multiple plates, adding the rest of the bomber formation in the background for some shots, and MAYBE terrain / ground detail correction. You could EASILY get all the hero planes live and have it look fucking fantastic. Lucas is not short of cash... he was short of caring enough to do it properly. |

The 56th, 352nd, 354th, 4th and 359th to just name a few. These were the best fighter groups in Europe during World War II. But they were all composed of white fighter pilots so I guess that does not make a good film nowadays. But back to the movie Red tails I think the movie was not that good. The movie Tuskegee Airmen was much better if you want to see a movie about this fighter group |

I saw it in the 90s...no need to see the "updated" version. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/Tuskegee-airmen-DVDcover.jpg That movie (and the acting) is 100x the movie Red Tails is. The thing I really like about TA versus Red Tails is they went into the history of the unit and showed them during training. |

You mean...actually built a story instead of just having CGI dogfights the whole time? Weird...I liked Tuskegee Airmen. Saw all the previews for Red Tails and I could think was "cheesey" |

One take on Red Tails. Some spoilers.
Thoughts on the movie "Red Tails": well, it fulfilled all of my expectations. There was a great deal of suckage. First of all, it covers the issue of racism just like two dozen other movies: it beats the audience over the head with the issue. But unlike, say, "The Help", it's not funny, the acting is bad, and the characters...what characters?
Talk, talk, talk with a few combat missions mixed in. Choose one or the other, but don't do both. The combat scenes were decent but often looked fake, like a video game. One major technical beef: the only German fighters shown were the BF-109 and, eventually, the ME-262. No FW-190, ME-110, ME-210, HE-162, ME-410, ME-163, or JU-88. And the German pilots are portrayed as bloodthirsty, seething scum who wish to bathe in the blood of "foolish Africans". Entirely too long, mostly boring and transparent. When one of the Red Tail pilots proposed to an Italian woman I looked over at my wife and said "he's going to die". And he did. Yawn. Give it a pass if you were thinking about renting this one. Try Memphis Belle, Twelve O'clock High, Battle of Britain, or, heck, even Top Gun. At least Top Gun had some real planes in it. |

I just watched Red Tails on blu ray. It was fun and I enjoyed it. Sure, there was some predictable and cliched stuff in it, but I didn't have terribly high expectations so I enjoyed it. I am glad I saw this thread, so I now know to look for the Tuskegee movie! Thats it, don't expect a lot. Blu Ray, 62" LCD, Yamaha 7.1 with the volume up, oh yeah |
| Had the honor of having lunch with five TA pilots a month ago. They mentioned there was some Hollywood crap that young black men wouldn't dream of doing in the 40's. One didn't care for the TA movie made in the 90's as he stated the foul language wasn't accurate for the time period. Stated 95% of the flights were boring. A great group of men, I wish more of our young men had their class. |

God, that movie was awful.
CGI instead of plausible physics. Computer-generated supporting actors (apparently––see the bomber pilots' dialogue for details). One-I-say-again-ONE German pilot character, and he's a cartoonishly evil Nazi. Inventing shit that never happened so as to have a threadbare excuse for a story. Tuskegee Airmen was easily 10x the movie, maybe 100x, that this was. Tora Tora Tora was worlds better, likewise Memphis Belle. Hell, even Pearl Harbor was Oscar material by comparison; at least it featured real actors and real airplanes. I will say that some of the Italy airbase sets are excellent. Those pyramidal squad-tents with bunks and crates? Well done. So much so, in fact, that a reenactor buddy of mine wrangled his way into acquiring a couple tents and some of the set-dressings a few months ago. Everything else is fail, though. |

more rewriting of history to meet an agendaOh boy I cannot wait to read your explanation of this so I can destroy it tomorrow morning. Sortie = one plane assignment Mission = multiple plane assignment So, 45 planes can do 45 separate sorties or combine in one mission. I'm not at the end of the movie but I read an old AF guy punching holes in their claims that they did all these missions (didn't happen) without loss of any bombers (also not true). But they do have the black Jessus. ETA - P-51 50 cals just destroyed a German destroyer. |

Was kind of interested in it when the talk first started. Tuskegee Airmen was a decent war flick with an interesting story, so I figured it
would be more of the same with better special effects and CGI, plus Lucas was involved, and I'm admittedly sort of an old Star Wars geek. Also, what's not to like about a movie with P-51s, Me-262s, B-17s, etc? It showed here 1 week and was gone from the theaters. A very liberal buddy tried to talk me into going but I balked. He was close to playing the race card but stopped short when I refused to be gulit- tripped into acquiescence. He saw it recently on DVD an said it was bad. I figure it will wind up on AMC, Spike, or some other network eventually and I'll catch it then. |

I remember being told that by the 332nd FW CC at Balad about them having never lost a bomber during the weekly in-processing briefing. I wonder if anybody ever called him in it before they closed the base down. |

I remember being told that by the 332nd FW CC at Balad about them having never lost a bomber during the weekly in-processing briefing. I wonder if anybody ever called him in it before they closed the base down. You were told a lie. "Of the 179 bomber escort missions the 332d Fighter Group flew for the Fifteenth Air Force, 146 did not encounter any enemy aircraft. Of the 33 bomber escort missions the 332d Fighter Group flew for the Fifteenth Air Force that encountered enemy aircraft, at least five were missions in which 332d Fighter Group-escorted bombers were shot down by enemy aircraft... The “never lost a bomber” statement is not accurate, but the courage and valor of the Tuskegee Airmen survives. The fact that some bombers were lost does not diminish the legendary contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen to the defeat of Nazi Germany" From: http://www.tuskegee.edu/sites/www/Uploads/files/About%20US/Airmen/EscortedBombersLosttoEnemyAircraft12.2011.pdf |
