I installed truecrypt about a month ago (version 7.1a). I used the full disk encryption so I have to enter the password before it will boot-up.

One thing I noticed is my computer is painfully slow for about 20 minutes after boot up. After that 20 minute period it is fine and it runs the same as it did before truecrypt.

Is there some way to speed this up? Can I change some settings to minimize this? All this is making me want to do is NOT shutdown my computer when I am away from the house which negates any benefit of using truecrypt in the first place.

My computer is a Dell XPS 1530
3GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @2.4GHz
Windows Vista Ultimate SP2.

Hope someone can help me out.

full disk encryption WILL slow any and all computers down.

with full disk encryption enabled there is no way to have the computer run as fast as it did before.

Do you know why the lack of performance only lasts for 20 minutes or so?

Might just take that long to get everything cached and decrypted.  Not really sure, it'd be very specific to your usage.

Well it sure sucks. The interesting thing is at work they just installed bitlocker full disk encryption on all laptops, including mine, and I have noticed no difference in boot time or performance after booting.

Did you use the Truecrypt default settings?

Yes I did. I think I tried to change them but it wouldn't let me change encryption algorithm or anything like that. IIRC it said those settings couldn't be changed when doing full disk.

I think the only thing it warned me about was that the drive was partition (recovery partition on the laptop). It suggested that I NOT encrypt the recovery partition so I didn't.

Get a fast solid state drive.

I have a FUJITSU MHY2250BH. I dont know how fast it is.

I don't think I can practically change the drive out in my laptop.

You can get a hardware PCI card to take the encrypt/decrypt load off of the CPU, they let you run at normal speed while keeping the data encrypted on the drive.  They aren't cheap.

I'd suggest leaving the OS files on  a non-encrypted partition, and documents and all other stuff on an encrypted partition.  There's tutorials around on how to do that.

Something is wrong, probably has nothing to do with TrueCrypt, but with Windows.

I use TC with full disk encryption and there is no noticeable difference in performance. I have a 3.4 4C i7 though so that is much faster than what you have.

I am playing with my antivirus (AVAST) and disabling portions of it to see if that improves the time required to fully boot.

If you can assemble an AR, then you can change a laptop drive.
