Well, preparing my flame suit since I'm probably going to have people tell me I shouldn't have guns in an apartment; but, here goes...

I live in a $600/month apartment on the good side of town (2nd floor) and have a small gun safe that houses my FAL, ($900) AK47, ($500) Yugo M59/66A1 SKS, ($270) an my Stevens Model 230 defense shotty. ($232) I've been thinking about dedicated firearms collectors insurance since there is always the possibility of a brute of a burglar taking the safe or breaking it.

Although I don't have much info on providers, which one is the best value/coverage, ect, ect.

So can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

This is relevant to my interests.

And I feel that use of the word "shotty" on Arfcom should be grounds for instant banning.

Maybe get a 'Renters' policy and cover everything, not just the toys ??

When I checked with Bankers, they insisted on a safe, a monitored alarm, an appraisal, photos, and an additional $100 in premium per $1000 additional coverage.

I thought that was a little steep seeing as how I was essentially paying to replace my collection once every ten years with that math.

This isn't bad advice, but be sure to read your policy fully before paying.  For example, my policy covers pretty much everything, but at a discounted rate.  I have $25K in property loss, but my guns are only insured at $400 per for a max of $2500.  So, if they stole all my guns, I'd get $2500.  If they stole my $3.5K 1911, I'd get $400.

Damn, that is steep. I guess since firearms are generally considered expensive and they really wouldn't want anything to happen to them. Considering all the policies with different people and varying sizes of collections.

I do have a friend in my hometown that has 2 safes and a motion sensing alarm, so I guess he would qualify. However that's him...

And I had a bad feeling that I should not have used the word "shotty" here. I usually only use that word for cheaper shotguns. Hence my $200 ($232 with tax) budget apartment defense gun. I'd consider one of my rifles a little too powerful for a break-in while I'm there. My next door neighbors might not appreciate the penetrating power of .308 and 7.62x39 with sheetrock walls.

I am planning on asking about renters insurance tho since I need to cover the flat screen, xbox, and any damage that may occur to the apartment. I'll have to ask if they'd cover firearms. I'll be going with USAA when I do get Renter's.

You have a $3.5k 1911 in your apartment? I left my $2500 Steyr AUG back home in my dad's safe for fear of loosing it.

I have renter's insurance to cover mine. They (State Farm) did not ask for pictures, descriptions, or serial numbers.

Eastern Insurance
My buddy has a LARGE collection of VERY high end exotic stuff and he researched it very thoroughly and this is who he uses.  Seems like a good deal.

USAA can do a rider for firearms, they tried to sell me that when I bought renters insurance through them.  I think it's pretty affordable for the rider, and I'm not 100% sure on what is covered in the renters insurance firearm-wise.

You could join the NRA and get $2500 a year with your $35 membership. And you can purchase additional coverage if you need it.

When I looked into it with USAA the rider was quite expensive. Enough to motivate us to buy a better safe and roll the dice.

Condo.  The association insures everything but the unit's contents, so I go with a renter's policy.
