Anybody use this system?

I've seen the commercials.

The thing I wonder is if Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other big brands would license their syrup formulas.

I would think if you just sold the concentrated syrup and let people do the carbonating and bottling (if that's how they want to go about it) themselves, you could make more money. I mean imagine if you cut out a large portion of the Coca-cola bottling co. costs out?

I don't drink soda much at all btw.

You can buy the syrup from distributors who sell it to people with soda fountains and shit, but I read someplace that there's not much cost saving to be had there. You could make your own syrup. Opencola is a free cola syrup recipe that I've heard is alright.

ETA: my brother has one, but I think he just uses it for making seltzer.

IDK how much it would cost, but I feel like an actual soda fountain would be in order.

I'm sure you could pick one up used for less, but those prices will give you an idea of what you can expect.  It's not cheap.

I saw what the restaurant i used to work for paid for concentrate.  The cost of syrup is nothing, it's the styrofoam cups they make you buy that cost out the ass.  "Oh, you need 10 gallons of concentrate, well you'll need 1000 cups to go with that."  We were a disposable cups only business and required by contract to sell all coke products in coke cups.  Stupidest crap i ever saw in my life.

Someone got fucked on that one.

At one of our restaurants we just pay a $90 rental fee for all the equipment and can buy the BIB form whomever we please. The other one we just have a stipulation that we have to order from Coca-Cola at least once a month and it has to include a case of water –– the rest of the time we can purchase from whomever is cheapest.

I was a 16 year old working in an ice cream and sandwich shop, i just signed for the delivery one day and asked "WTF, why do we pay for all those cups and why are they that pricey?!?!!" Owners answer was what i first posted.  I thought it was Rucking Fetarded too.

Funny, I was thinking about posting something about this product and asking too.

I looked at their website, and crunched the numbers, and just in consumables alone (the syrup & CO2) it costs about 50 cents
per 2 liter of soda.

That's decent, but no huge bargain. You'd have to drink an awful lot of soda to make your investment back. A decent unit is at least
$150, then you have to use their special bottles, which they claim are only good for 2 years, and you have to do this CO2 bottle
mail back bullshit, and yada yada.

It's really not that great of a deal. You have to drink a TON of soda for it to be worth it. After amortizing the cost of the machine, and
the special bottles, you'd really only be saving at the most 50 cents per 2 liter bottle. I pay about $1.25 or less for Coke in 2 liters
usually. Less when it's on sale.

Maybe if they had special flavors you really liked. Also, I'd want to try the flavors before buying. I'm really particular. I wouldn't want
to invest in the damn thing and then not like the flavors. They really need to have tasting stations setup at some retailers.

These were popular in England some 30 years ago, we had one when I was a kid. Never caught on in the US at the time because Soda was so cheap here in comparison.  They worked OK, providing you liked the taste of their products. didn't really save a huge amount, kept running out of gas (not something you could pick up at the local store, unlike more soda), so most people's ended up in yard sales after a few months...

Actually came to post the exact same thing.

I've tried it, the syrups aren't bad but I just can't see how it's worth the cost unless you drink a crapton of soda.

get a CO2 tank like that used for brewing beer, save y our old 2 liter drink bottles, get the carbonator cap from http://www.weekendbrewer.com/carbonatorcap.htm and make your own soda, you'll have to find the syrup.

A lot of homebrewers make root beer as well.   I still have 5 gallon cornelius kegs that could be used for that

6/18/2012 3:51:39 AM EDT
[#17]
I've had it for years and use it for seltzer. Works pretty well, but the co2 prices are high.

I was reading up on making an adaptor for their tanks which would allow you to get them refilled at regular gas suppliers.  That would bring the price down to a fraction of what it is.

Syrups are ok.  The non diet are usually sweetened with sugar (not corn syrup). They also have some unusual ones...my kids love the "country time lemonaid" mix with seltzer.

I have a Sodastream.   Love it.  I make a homebrew energy drink that tastes just like the various Rockstars out there.

I doubt there is much cost savings when it comes to the normal sodas.  However, when it comes to making your own energy drink with their mix vs buying 4 packs of Rockstars/Redbulls, the Sodastream wins hands down.  Its also nice not having to lug 2 litres home and I honestly think most of the Sodastream flavors taste better than their off the shelf counterparts..

Even if you bought the original coke syrup it old not taste the same. The bottling plants filter that waterwithinan inch of its life, so what goes in has almost no minerals or pollutants.  Your home water would likely have at least chlorine which will alter the taste.

I've been thinking about getting one but I won't be able to use it to carbonate other things like beer, cider, wine, or my own soda mixes. Then there is the cost of the CO2 cartridges.

I think something like this would be a better alternative

Same thing with the K-cups and Keurig coffee makers. You aren't saving money.

It'll change your life.

One person can reasonably drink enough beer at 2/day to "pay for" the system within a year or two.  That, and you get to enjoy draft beer.

It's a must for homebrewers, because of the time saved bottling vs. kegging, but still optional for anyone else who just likes to drink beer.

Please note:  They are not maintenance-free, so you will have to clean the thing occasionally.  Just be aware.

Its the sugar, caffeine, and other crap in the syrup.  My gf has one and uses it all the time for just seltzer. - much cheaper than buying 1L bottles of seltzer in the store, and much better than drinking sugary sodas.  Occasionally we'll add a little orange or lemon juice for flavor though.

I have been reading that this is a common problem.  Diet soda makes you drink more of it because of the high sodium levels which usually makes people eat while drinking it.

I have been drinking way too much diet Coke over the last few years and have steadily packed on about 30lbs.  Time to start drinking more water I guess.
