House built in mid-eighties, vaulted ceilings...want to make them smooth. Hate that crap with a passion.

A certain percentage of popcorn ceiling contained asbestos. I had an entire house I owned once remodeled and all the popcorn ceiling removed. The dry wallers came in with scaffolds to stand on and sprayed the popcorn ceiling with water, scraped it off wet, and loaded it into hefty bags. We were doing all the floors and carpet at the same time so anything that fell on the floor went out with the old flooring. The stuff is ugly. I can't stand popcorn ceiling. |

Bug sprayer,warm water,plastic on floor.
Spray a section let it soak abit, work backwards into clean area leaving scraping fall out in front of you rather than willy nilly Helter skelter where your tracking it. Roll up plastic with wet popcorn. A wet towel rub after scraping gets any random high spots as well as smoothes it out nice- didn't believe this until a guy working for me did it. |

Its some work, but using the sprayer helps. You can get a scraper that goes on the end of a broom handle that makes it much easier. Scrape. Prime. Paint.

Unless you love hours of mudding, taping and sanding overhead while standing on a ladder, I would hire a pro.
Since the guys who did them back in the day knew they were gonna have popcorn sprayed on them, they didn't devote much time to finishing the drywall underneath. Have them in my house too, if I owned the place they would be the first thing to go. |

Pain in the ass to get smooth. Pressure sprayer like you use for weed killer filled with water. Popcorn comes right off. Then the hard part. Filling and sanding. I worked over a condo that had popcorn ceilings, spray it down, and scrape it off. Then the fun part of re mudding and finish sand... We did the ceiling first then just rolled up the carpet... PITA to clean up that mess. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I don't like popcorn ceilings either. As a matter of fact, we're debating about having it knocked down for our kitchen/bath remodel, but it's a lot of money. Personally, I don't look at my ceilings enough to have it bother me, but we'll see how much my wife makes an issue of it. |

This is how I did it. But if it has ever been painted you can forget it, no way it's coming off. |

I knew a guy who bought a house with popcorn ceilings. His wife, a 1st class bitch, hated them and wanted it removed. He told her that it was not the time, to do it, because of money and he wanted it done right. Plus he warned her that it might have asbestos in it and he wanted it checked before it was done. So one day, while he's at work, she scrapes a section of the ceiling, then calls a contractor. He comes over, sure enough, asbestos. Now that she had disturbed the ceiling, it had to be removed. $12k later, he's got new ceilings. |

textured drywall sucks. Find a guy that actually knows how to slick finish. also buy some beer, it will be worth it. When my dad was building houses, the only trade he subbed-out was finish drywall. There really is skill and technique involved to make it look good. |

Ugh I have popcorn ceilings... Hope it doesn't have asbestos... I got a professional to rip mine down, haven't got a bill for it yet. I also have this on my ceiling... I call it cool whip. It's 1.5-2" tall. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s480x480/401772_10151866510080301_93293653_n.jpg Holy crap Batman. I don't feel so bad now. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Just a quick bed and tape job, no real attention like you would pay to a smooth ceiling. |

"You can do it yourself, but it'll be a lot of manual labor. I'd go for it." MINUS 1 I had it done this year by a professional crew that does apartment buildings. Note, I said a crew. After you take the crap down, you need to smooth out the ceiling and repaint. It is also the time to do any electrical work like put in lighting, which I did. $12,000 to do a 3 bedroom house with dining room, living room, and den. Of course, you can do it all yourself if you have enough time. My next door neighbor did his own roof last year. Took a full year and he still did not replace the rotted headers or the broken splitters. |
) had it.
