Forcing abortions in China. No "choice" of anything

The fact that a country with a LAW (that's been on the books for decades) that restricts people to one child, might force someone to have an abortion shouldn't really come as a surprise.  How else would they enforce it?

The unusual thing about this case is how LATE the abortion was.  Plus, I believe they would have let her keep the child if she had been able to pay whatever fine the law requires for people that violate it.  So it's not like the Chinese automatically FORCE an abortion if people violate the one-child law, but they will apparently do so if you cannot afford the fine.

Come to think of it, some on arfcom should love it.  After all, everyone complains about "Idiocracy" and how the stupid and poor people are having more kids than the smart people.  Well, if you accept the premise that smarter and better educated people TEND to (as a general rule) do better in life, in terms of financial success, good jobs, etc - then this means that in China, the successful smart and educated people CAN afford to pay the fines and have two or three children, whereas the poor and uneducated stupid people cannot have more than one child.

In other words, China is in fact doing the very thing that would prevent the predictions of Idiocracy, whereas the U.S. is doing everything it can to allow that prediction to come true.

So, why doesn't arfcom love this story, and the Chinese system?

You should have to pass a test, prove financial stability, and take a parenting class before being granted a permit to have a child.

What's fucked up is getting solicited for money to fight childhood obesity only to be solicited a few blocks away for money to fight childhood hunger.

My solution to both problems doesn't require money for anyone. Just take the Big Mac and fries from the fat kid and split the food among 2 or 3 hungry ones. Problem solved.

I have read that the fine can be based on ability to pay - Lille Zimmerman's bond. Highest fine to date was over a million dollars. That said there is somewhate selective enforcement. It is rigeriously enforced in the cities, but not so much in rural areas.   Co-workers husband had 3 siblings and has a few more nieces and nephews than he should of (sister sent them to live with his parents bfe china)

I've met a lot of children raised by very intelligent and wealthy individuals who were absolutely worthless. I've met plenty who were born to parents living in poverty who have done very well. As a American and freedom loving person I cannot bring myself to condemn someone to death just because of who their parents are.

Also, in the Communist system of China you're not talking about a fair system when it comes to opportunities for people to acquire wealth. You're talking about a nation that literally picks winners and losers for how wealth is distributed. So, it's not very fair to say that just because someone is wealthy in China and someone else is poor that the wealthy person is a harder worker or more intelligent. China is a rigged economic system.

I (like most Americans) thought like DK-Proff until two years ago when I dated a Chinese National on a STEM visa.  I dated her not for normal reasons...more than anything I was interested in her from an intellectual standpoint to learn about communism, China, and socialism from someone who's entire life was in that environment.  One of our topics of conversation was the one child law.

THIS IS NOT WHAT THE AMERICANS THINK!

The one child law doesn't force you to get an abortion if you don't want to.  But if you are in that situation, you are required to get an abortion and only rear one child if you want *any government assistance*.  If you are individually wealthy and don't need government assistance you can have as many children as you want.  Or if you are in a rural area that has no government contact (that evidently exists) you can have as many children as you want.

I was personally blown away by this and have to believe first hand knowledge over our (often) oversentualized American Media.

(spelling may be shoddy, I'm drunk)

So if you care, send $6300 to the Chinese officials for every extra child you want to save - or have obama send free condoms to the Chinese too.

This isn't my problem - I've paid far more than that for my children.  I'm not responsible for every staving kid on Africa or aborted kid in China - I'm responsible for my own children.

It's a Chinese child tax, and those tax collectors need and depend on that money.

Did you read the articles?  What I posted isn't a direct quote - but it's the message that was conveyed.  It's not my idea, but apparently the Chnese enforce this because they need and have spent the income.
