Your PC or Mac belongs in the trash can.  4096 cores and 64 terabytes of ram is what real men use.

SGI Launches Second Generation UV Supercomputer - Michael Feldman

The sequel to SGI's UV supercomputer has arrived. Dubbed UV 2, the new platform doubles the number of cores and quadruples the memory that can be supported under a single system. The product, which will be officially announced next week at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, represents the first major revision of SGI's original UV, which the company debuted in 2009.

iTunes might actually be zippy, on that.

Maybe.

Doubtful. iTunes on anything but OSX is a fucking nightmare...

Finally.  Hardware technology that has caught up to the demands of Tetris.

Not many apps lend themselves to massive SMP architectures, but I'm sure that with the memory maxed out, one could browse on Firefox for several hours with that.

Even on OSX, it kind of sucks, performance-wise. It's a little better though, I agree.

I wish they'd scrap it and re-write it.

If they did, they would do it the typical Apple way and take away even more features they don't think we need.

Seems like apple software is designed for the lowest common denominator

Install Windows 8 on it and it'll run just like every other single-cpu PC.

BTW, I worked with a company named N-Cube in the early 90s that had a 4096 cpu super computer with multiple terabytes of memory.  The problem was that NO operating system could take advantage of its parallel processing capabilities.

"On that front, the UV 2 engineers opted for the latest Intel "Sandy Bridge" Xeon E5-4600 family chips,"

So can it play Crysis?

How many instances of MineCraft can it handle and how big of an auto gen machine can it run?

Just imagine how shitty of a programmer you have to be to create "bloatware" for something like that. The real tragic thing is, someone would end up doing just such at thing.

As hardware comes faster and cheaper, efficient programming becomes rarer and rarer.

One of the uses for that box is hadoop, which is used by Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.

SGI has been relevant since I was a *smoke editor.

And that was a long time ago.
