I read a post somewhere, and now I can't find it, that stated that you must take a newly acquired M1 Garand from CMP to a qualified gunsmith, before firing it to make sure it's safe.

I thought that they tested them before shipping?  I am not finding anything like that on the CMP website.

For those that have one.  Did you do that?  Or did you just go out and shoot it?

I sent my paperwork in the other day for a Springfield Service Grade and am reading everything I can.

All the guns are inspected and, if need be, fixed before they're released for sale.

I have a question that just popped into my mind.  IIRC you can't order one because you're not a citizen, right?  Is your wife a citizen?  Could she get one as a Christmas present to her favorite lil Dutch boy?  Just tossing around ideas.

She could, and she had expressed some willingness to do so.  But, since she's not into guns, it seems disingenuous to have her order one.  So instead, I've been paying the "gunshow markup" for the Garands I own.

Check your firing pin.

I took mine to the range without inspecting all the internals and there was a WW2 vet with his son shooting.  I let the WW2 have the first shot out of the gun and it just went *click*.  His face still lit up as he got to hold a Garand again and thanked me even though it didn't fire.  I got home and tore it down and my firing pin had broken in two.  I got ahold of CMP, who was very surprised at this and asked that I ship it back so they could inspect it and they sent me a new one within a week to replace it.

Ok, I just wanted to see if you'd thought of that.  I need to get a CMP Garand, I really do.  My "tanker" needs a big (if younger) brother.

Shoot the hell out of it!

It'll be fine.

Here's my SA Service Grade I got in October of 2007. My only regret is that I didn't order a full 53' trailer of HXP when it was cheap back then. I'd find some place to stockpile 26 pallets of that HXP goodness...

I have about 1200 rounds through her, all trouble free. She does about 2.5"-4" at 100yds with the Greek M2 ball. A little better with a 168gr BTHP handload.

When a woman asks you if you want a blow-job, do you check with your Daddy to make sure it is OK?

Just shoot the fooking gun!

I guess I am living on the edge.  I didn't take my CMP Garand to a gunsmith, I just shot it.

Years ago, I didn't take my Blue Sky Garand to a gunsmith, I just shot it.

My Blue Sky carbine?  Correct!  I just shot it.
