My dad has a pistol and asked me WTF it was. I told him what i think but he thinks i am wrong. Can any one chime in here?
What i think it is This is what i think it is. 
.38 S&W center fire caliber, 5 shot revolver "Standard 1878" , spur trigger, tip-up, 3 1/4" barrel, marked J.M. Marlin, New Haven, Ct., U.S.A., Pat. July 1, 1873, manufactured from 1878 to 1887, production was approximately 12000 This is what he has in his hand and his description IT IS A JMM-SERIAL NUMBER 3113-38 STANDARD. JMMARLIN NEW HAVEN CT. JULY 1- 1878. THE CYLINDER HOLDS 5 SHELLS. THAKS SON . LOVE AS ALWAYS DAD
