I've heard some good ones, wish I could remember them.  I really should start carrying a notepad and pen.

Son: "What makes it a sniper rifle?"

Dad: "The guy using it"

What do you mean background check? The guy over there has the same gun at half the price and he don't even want an id
He's selling Airsoft....

Ya that's what he said, it's full auto and everything. Does yours go full auto and why is it so heavy?

Two in particular stand out from when I worked the gun counter and these customers insisted on impressing me with their awesomeness...

"I can hit an 8" gong at 2,000 yards with my open-sighted .375  all day long."
(It's been my experience that any sentence ending with the words "all day long" should be taken to mean "I'm lying but I'm sure you'll believe me.")

"Marine snipers have been using the Remington 710 for the last 30 years. I know because I was a Marine and I worked on their rifles."

A place in Clarksville Tennessee told my brother the same amount, and that it was the same price as everybody else in the area. He went down the road and found a place that charged $25.
Straight up lying to try and get business is total bullshit.

"Well the Mini-14 is what the US Gov't ordered to arm the South Vietnamese.  Ya see, the ol' M1 would knock a ARVN on his ass first shot.  But we started giving them these and they used the same round as the M-16 but were simpler to use and lighter so the little guys could handle them."

"I want a Glock 45!  Yeah thats what I want.  I want it to blow a f'n leg off in one shot...."  "Ha ha!  Really funny - theres no handgun that'll really blow someones leg off in one shot but you must be talking about this Glock 21 right here."  " Nah man!  I said I want a Glock 45!  Don't want none of that 21 shit!  I my broher shot those in the Marines and they won't kill shit!  Give me a Glock 45!"

"You don't need any big pistol for self defense.  More people are killed by the .22 than any other caliber.  It goes in down here, bounces around and comes out up in your neck.  Everything inbetween is just torn up.  Take this little Taurus right here......"

Situation:  Sign on the counter and above the gun rack in large bold letters:  "Do Not Take the Firearms Apart.  Ask for Assistance."  Right in front of the signs, a guy takes the dust cover off a WASR and pulls out the bolt carrier.  He manages to get it back in but can't get the dust cover back on and stands the WASR on its muzzle on the floor and starts banging the rear of the dustcover with his fist.    All the while the owner of the store is standing there looking at him with a disgusted expresssion.  Finally he says "You gonna buy that G-damned thing or just tear it up?  Just leave it on the counter and get the hell out."  I used to wonder why he was grumpy sometimes and after he sees crap like that on a daily basis, I can understand it.

Hang around enough and work enough counters at shops or shows and the zingers pile up.

I keep hearing about that 'filing down of the firing pin" that makes the AR into a full auto and how they would do that to an AR somebody in the unit owned, fire it and shatter the bolt.  Then they would swap it with an M-16 bolt and put the shattered one in the M-16.  The armor would just replace it and they got a full auto bolt in their AR and no one knew.

Not in a gun store, but I had a co-worker who just bought a departing co-worker's AR ask me, in the faltering words of a man who doesn't know the technical terms, if removing the disconnector would make it full auto.  Spent a few minutes explaining the mechanical and legal facts.

This is why my dad always taught me to never hand a chambered weapon over to anyone.  Always open the bolt before you hand it over!  This is something I beat into my kids head now!

a buddy of mine used to run a  gun shop. He charged 25 I think. The way he looked at it, for a few minutes worth of work (on average) he could get 25 bucks. He told me he was happy to do 10 a day if he could.

LGS Customer:
What's the effective difference between a 16 inch AR and a 20 inch AR in terms of range?

You know what the difference is? That 20 inch barrel barrel shoots 4 inches farther than that 16 inch barrel. That's all there is to it.

I love it when people say that crap to me at the range, so I've started carrying one in my range bag when some half wit starts babbling that bs I pull out the file, hand them the rifle and say - show me......

Lots of stuttering and excuses usually follows, usually ending with well that's what my buddy / dad / super duper navy seal marine recon cia friend told me.

At a gun show, there was a vendor with stun guns.  He kept setting them off to get attention so you often heard that electrical popping sound.  When we got close to his table we heard somebody say "I wish that he would quit dry firing those full autos over there."

Nope, I kinda hate to say b/c the owners are HUGE pro-2A activists and I think this was just some punk kid that was friends with another RSO.  The name is sort of like "Warm Springs" and it is off a major HWY that you can take to Austin.

OK I remember one.  I purchased my 2nd AK-47 clone WASR 10 and it came with an oil bottle, a bayonet and a cleaning kit.  As the owner was packing it up he said "now you know you CANNOT install that bayonet or you could go to prison for it.  It's illegal and turns it into an assault rifle."  This was 2005.

"Whoa!  The next biggest comes on wheels!"

Heard that line half a dozen times on the same visit. Best part was I got to wait at the register for 10 minutes listening to all the old farts bullshit each other and the shop owner before some lady came out from the back to ring me up.

Random guy at a gun show:
"The shells from the F-14's cannon had so much energy that if they hit a man's finger tip it would take off his arm at the shoulder."

"If I ever had to shoot someone with my AR, I'd swap it out with my .223 hunting rifle before the cops showed up."

not funny but at a gun show I saw a guy pick up a revolver off a table and point it at his wifes head and pull the trigger about 6 times and say why wont you die........

I was at a DIcks Sporting Goods store talking about bolt actions and the guy at the counter was adamant that if I put a detachable magazine on a Remington 700 it'd be illegal.

I've also heard the countless preban quotes:

"Yeah I want a preban so I can put a 14" barrel on it"
"I want a preban so I can use mags over 10rds in it, since I can only use post ban mags in my gun now"
"I'm gunna get a preban so I can have full/auto"

I don't even need to get started on all the Judge quotes. According to all of them the Judge is the best gun ever made. Ever.
