can anyone recommend an open source video editing software?
I want to be able to take a youtube/facebook video and add some sound effects , slow motion to it.

I'd like to know as well.
I'd like to take a few short scenes from various movies and use them in my physics class. You know, calculate the backward velocity of a guy hit with a .45 bullet.

Simplest = Windows Live Movie Maker.
Youtube has some video editing features as well.

Virtual Dub or Avidemux is what I typically use when needed.
