Here is the problem:

If you are driving 58 mph, how long would it take you to go 32 miles.

I came up with 33.1 minutes.

Wife's practice test answer says 40.

Idiots.

When it doubt, just cancel units out.

Example -

You're trying to find time, so you need to divide miles by miles/hour to arrive at hours.

32/58 = Answer

I got the same answer. I recently bought study guides for other exams and found many typos and errors.

It didn't matter if the copy was $33 or $50.

Your wife's practice test makers are idiots...it is 33.1

58/60=32/X

Cross multiply 60x32=1,920

1,920/58=X=33.1

[#5]
Yep, 33 minutes
5/22/2012 4:38:31 PM EDT
[#6]
Here is how I did it:

58 miles / 60 minutes = .966 miles each minute

32 / .966 = 33.1 minutes

You're right, the book is wrong.
5/22/2012 4:39:16 PM EDT
[#8]
I set it up as a ratio for ease.

58 miles to 60 minutes is 32 miles to X minutes.
5/22/2012 4:39:27 PM EDT
[#9]
58 mph = 0.0172 hpm

.0172 x 32 = .5517 h

.5517 x 60 = 33.1 min

I got 33.1 as well as OP with your formula.

[#11]
Or you could look at it like this:

32 mi. x 1 / (58 mi/hr.) = 0.55 hour

0.55 hour x 60 min / 1 hour = 33.1 minutes

Your units will always cancel out to the correct unit for the answer if you did the math correctly.

They're just using 0bama math.

Go for a drive and time it.

There is no way to arrive at any other answer, for the stated parameters, (and then put that wrong answer in a book) that does not include debilitating idiocy.

Well there's your problem.

The answer assumes a female driver.

Fixed it a little better.  Remember, units must always cancel out. (leavin you with nothing but the correct unit for the answer).  You can solve problems you don't even know how to solve like that.

Read like 58 mph is a typo and the speed in the question was supposed to be 48 mph.

Is it one of those questions that asks you to pick the closest answer?  Like the answers are 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, and 58 minutes?  For some tests, questions can be more about the instructions then the answers.

Nope, just asks how long it takes.

58 mph   58 divided by 60 gives you .9666 miles per minute.

32 divided by .966 gives you 33.1......

Book is wrong.
