Picked this up today from my grandmother. According to her it has been stored since my granfathers death in 1996. He acquired it fromn his father and it was allegedly issued to a family member. Here are the pertinent markings:

SN # 23312 (IN AT LEAST 4 PLACES I CAN FIND)
Cylinder is marked with PAT SEPT 10th 1856
ON FRAME JUST BELOW CYLINDER "COLT PATENT"
Top of Barrel is marked with ADDRESS CCL OR OCL SAM COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA
MARKED .36 JUST ABOVE THE TRIGGER GUARD

Attached are a few pics anyone tell me what I have and maybe a date and an insurable worth (Dont want to sell it)

I'm assuming it's an 1860 Army because the guy above me posted that.  I think it was made in '62.

Now we have 3 model guesses.

We're supposed to be narrowing it down, people!

It could be a 61 Navy if its six shot or a 62 pocket police if its five shot. It's absolutely NOT an Army. After looking again I'm going to agree with the pocket police guy.

I'm not at all knowledgeable about antique guns; one of the reasons I'm following this is that I'd like to find out.

I found the 'proofhouse' website while researching something I saw on a TV show.

Nice patina!

Has it ever been fired?

BP is fun to shoot.

There's always a lot of discussion about shooting Colt BP revolvers. One camp says if you shoot them they lose value... assuming you bought the gun as a collection piece with no intent to shoot it anyway. Another camps says shoot it and enjoy. If it has deeper historical provenance, shooting may affect it's 'collectability'.

.36 round lead ball will put a good hurt on.

Thanks for posting the picture.

+1. Shoots as fast as lightning but it loads mighty slow. Loads mighty slow. Gets you into trouble but it can't get you out.

So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45

Called a peacemaker but I never knew why

Never knew why, I didn't understand

Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

this was my guess.
1860 Armys were longer, and .44 cal , I think.

It's a police model.

The grips bother me, I don't think they are original. The grip frame has been cleaned, but that's probably okay if no edges were rounded off.  It's worth about $2000 anyway.
