Just picked up a TA-312 field phone on a whim.  Looks hardly used and is going to be the newest edition to the Wingnut man cave.  Coupled with a Magic Jack, I think I have the clunkiest portable phone around.  Made a special phone cord to match out of a boot lace, some heat shrink tubing, and a telephone cord.

So, whatcha think?

My TA-955 DTMF adapter is coming in tomorrow, so I'll be able to dial out.

I was thinking about going for a rotary, but it would be an absolute pain in the ass to make it work with some VoIP systems and it wouldn't work at all with the Magic Jack.

If you just want a point-to-point phone, and don't need any ability to interface with your normal phone line, check out some of the surplus digital phones.

Yep, and that's one I am NEVER pushing.  I mean, the last guy that Fent didn't return.  I can only imagine the power I will be able to wield when my TA-955 comes in (and I can find a J battery to power it with).

I've kind of been looking for a pair of TA312's for a while now...any tips on where I can find them?

I found mine on Ebay, but some of them are getting bid up to stupid expensive levels.  I paid 60 for mine, but it is in primo shape.  You can also keep an eye out for TA-838 phones, they are the phones that replaced the TA-312.  Or, if you want to go with the 312, you can find the TA-955 HERE.

But like I said above, if you are only wanting point to point comms and no interface to PSTN phones, go for the surplus digital phones.

I didn't either, that's why I have the Magic Jack for my Man Cave hotline.

Nope, it's consider a Mantique!  Or Retro Badass.

ETA:  Definitely not steampunk.  I could literally beat a Commie to death with this sumbitch.  It is built like the proverbial masonry outhouse.

I appreciate the thought, but I was a commo troop in the AF.  We even had some of these phones and the 838's knocking around when I was in.

It was only because a TA-838 was too expensive and I couldn't figure out how to interface TRI-TAC circuits to a magic jack.

I considered a pay phone, but not only did the field phone fit with my decor, it was also well within my budget:

All told, I am out around $150 for everything including a year of phone service:

TA-312 phone and carrier - Ebay $~60 plus shipping
TA-955 dial pad - Bpb surplus $25 plus shipping (looks like I got the last one.  They have brand new ones at http://www.murphyjunk.bizland.com/index.html for $~30 plus shipping)
Green boot laces - WalMart $2
Phone Cord - Walmart $4
Heat Shrink Tubing - Had it from another project ~$.50 or so
Security sticker - Found it behind an equipment rack in Korea (FREE!)
Magic Jack - Walmart $40 including one year of service
J-Cell battery - Radio Shack $10.49
Awesome phone number to hide behind - Google Voice $FREE
