[ARCHIVED THREAD] - AR15.com Membership.... (Page 1 of 3)

So I contacted membership services regarding my interest in being a paying member. All I asked was if I could change my username because I no longer wish to have my name as my username. I was told, "we can only do that in extenuating circumstances" and then was told that if I make a new account for my membership, it'll get denied.
WTF is this shit? Some dude just wants to join up and be a member, but changing his username upon doing so is, "disruptive to the board." WTF is disruptive about me changing account status and username? Now, I completely understand that having dudes change their username every day is a complete freakin' neusance, but I'm trying to start paying which will change my account status.....why couldn't I also change my username to get my name taken out of it? Honestly, I've never been pissed about anything on this forum before; until now. Such BS....I'm trying to pay to contribute and I can't even be given the courtesy of getting my name taken out of my username. Bitch over...... |

... Now, I completely understand that having dudes change their username every day is a complete freakin' neusance, ... And that's the reason right there. There are hundreds of thousands of members on ar15.com. If we allow you to change yours, we open the door to people changing their names "just because" and it becomes exactly that complete freakin' nuisance you imagine it could be. It opens a door that we'd rather keep shut. Sorry. |

The administrative overhead would be entirely bearable. I know because I've managed large forums in the past. |

I know because I've managed large forums in the past. I'm just explaining the policy - I'm not in a position to change or influence it. I'm just a goon. But, it's absolutely something you can suggest in the Site Suggestions Forum, or directly suggest to GoatBoy or EdAvila |

DanTSX (or wtf his name is) has already done the "look how annoying my avatar is" routine. It's tired now. |
| I picked a name that was random enough, yet easy enough to remember. It was supposed to be a55, like ass, but I think it was too short, so I said a555. Then, after I signed up and made a couple posts, I got a PM asking if I was into tuning Reliant K cars, because a555 was the part number for the axle. It was then I realized that nothing is random and the type of random knowledge possessed in the hive. |

I've heard of one or two others, one of which was something about protecting someone's ID, for very real personal reasons. |

Well that's what I'm saying. I understand DK 100%....that shit would be ridiculous. But when going from freeloader to paying, and the fact that I wish to remove my real name for anonymity purposes, I would hope that wouldn't be a problem. My bitch is over now......but I still think it's BS. I consider my reasoning.....legit. Quoted:

It'll be a hell of a lot more constructive than a bitching thread. |

There is a member here on AR15 that brags about getting his name changed when he became a life member. I've seen him mention it at least 3 times. It's sorta annoying (to me anyways) "Look at me, look at me, I'm great"

My bitch is over now......but I still think it's BS. I consider my reasoning.....legit. I hear what you are saying, and agree that sometimes the policies and rules CAN be unfair to a few people. Posts asking for the value of a gun in G.D. for instance, almost ALWAYS get locked immediately, because of the potential of abuse, and for people trying to "stealth" advertise something they have for sale - and that policy unfairly screws people that legitimately just wanted to know the value of an old heirloom or something like that - but to keep the site running smoothly and keep the integrity of a well-functioning Equipment Exchange, we need to be draconian about that policy. As someone else said, your handle certainly doesn't look like an identifying name - but could mean a million things, so hopefully it will never be an issue. If it actually became an issue or problem for you (like an ugly divorce, or a stalker, or something - and your name was pretty obvious or rare), then you are probably getting closer to the extenuating circumstance that Staff might consider. |
