He has what looks like pus leaking from his anus. I cant get to a vet at the moment. Any clue what this may be ? |
| Normal. He is just expressing his anal glands. My dogs do this once or twice a week. It smells AWFUL! His glands could be full though too however, may need to take him to vet and have the vet express them. This involves vet going in there with the index and breaking the sacks. |

It's nasty but the vet will take care of it. |

It could be a blocked anal gland. If it has been rainy lately, and your dog has what I call "fancy feet" (where they don't like to get their paws wet), your dog may have avoided going to the bathroom which does help to express the anal glands. If you look at it, there could be a bump or a hole even where the site is.
If it is an anal gland problem, I would clean the area, and give your dog half of a can of pumpkin once a month. This helps to expand their stool, so it will force the anal glands to express when the dog does have a bowel movement. I have only learned this because I thought my dag had some sort of fire ant bite on her butt. That is what her vet did, and in a week she was fine. They also said that a groomer could express the anal glands, but it tends to be very painful, so that is why he recommended the pumpkin. I hope your pooch will be fine soon. |

My old pooch had problems with the anal gland.
I put on disposable rubber gloves, grabbed a bike bottle full of water for the rinse, and a few paper towels. I would take the dog outside, away from the house. I squeezed the butt hole and typically got a good squirt although sometimes just get a dribble. The stuff that comes out is quite foul. Rinse, pat dry, dispose of gloves & towels immediately. The dog didn't mind it, actually perked up afterwards. |

what kind of dog?
it happens to the anal glands in big dogs but see it far more in smaller dogs. careful with the them if they are infected or have a blockage sometimes the problem self corrects and similar to fish oil, it will stain/stink up anything it touches |

Thanks. But yes...PUMPKIN, not pumpkin and other stuff. It's given in addition to their food (so between feedings), should have specified that so the dog doesn't miss a meal because I can't imagine plain pumpkin being tasty. |

We give our spaniel a heaping tablespoon every day and it helps keep things moving since he's mostly sedentary. FYI plain pumpkin tastes like raw squash - it's not bad. |

I only had to take mine in once for this. Thankfully. |

Our dog used to have anal gland problems. We started feeding him a spoonful of pumpkin a day no problems since. Just in case no one has said it, be sure its 100% pumpkin and not pie mix ( the stuff with spices, sugars and the like). |

My guy has some irritable bowel stuff going on and Pumpkin helps things move along and keep everything ok. It's a lifesaver. I probably use a spoonful every day or so and it seems to work nicely. The thing is.....around the holidays Pumpkin gets tough to find. I normally just stock up on cases so I never run out. One year, I checked Ebay and a can of Pumpkin was inflated 300%. Gotta love it.

OP, it does sound like an anal sac problem (NOT anal glands, anal glands line the anal sac). Either express them yourself or take him to the vet. +1,000,000 There's also a spray that neutralizes the shitty-fishoil smell that you can use right after doing the deed. I'm sure you can use Lysol or some of those citrius sprays people have in their bathrooms to freshen the stench. Probably toxic for pets though. When my guy had his glands expressed, the vet techs immediately grabbed the spray and started spraying the air and his bung-holio. My guy was like...what the hell...first, I get a finger in the butt, then you spray some stinky cologne on me. |

imagine the dog is a gun.
follow the four rules. you want to be to the side of the dog by the front shoulders one hand pulls up on the tail the other gives the squeeze. use gloves. cover the muzzle with paper towels if your not outside. if they dog cries or is struggling and biting at you then it needs a vet visit. if it just stand there giving you the wtf look or the pleasure look....your unfortunately doing it right.
ohh and +1 on not pumpkin pie mix the cinnamon in it will uhhh have a negative effect on your dog... |

Who remembers Gene5's thread about this a few weeks ago? Remember, if you are going to express the anal glands, be sure you study the diagram first. What he did is illegal in most states. That thread had the potential to be epic. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man express the anal gland for his Dog. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
