They would have been trying to forge weld a new plate on top of it to repair one that was really beat up for some kind of demonstration. Only problem they let the anvil get way too hot and it burnt the steel (thats what the mangled looking mess of a anvil is on the second pic) Why that pic is in here is a to me that's actually a very work intensive and big project to take on as a blacksmith.

SInce you seem to know a bit about them, what would a really nice old one be worth? I was at a garage sale today and there was a big old one for sale [not chinese] for $50 that was very nice.

When I bought mine like 10 years ago I remember paying close to $2 a pound for a decent peter wright. I haven't priced one lately but I would expect to pay maybe around $3 or less a pound. Hell, at $50 that probobly was a steal granted it wasn't a cast iron anvil.

The idea was to braze a new top on.  Got the anvil too warm!

There are scads of old anvils around that aren't worth a hoot for blacksmithing due to sway back tops and gouged surfaces.  New anvils cost a small fortune, old anvils cost a slightly smaller fortune, so there's motivation to restore them for use.

Seen them go for 3 bucks a pound or so at auction

I've resurfaced a couple of smaller anvils using my Bridgeport (clone) milling machine and surface grinder.  But never brazed a new top onto one.

Probably worth a trip back to the house to find out if the anvil sold.  If the top is in good condition, it will sell immediately, and probably bring $3 or more.  An old anvil with a good top, cutting table, and horn is a prize.

If this anvil has a steel top, you'll be able to see the bond line between the top and case base.  If it does not have a steel top, it's not worth much to a blacksmith, but for $50, some decorator will need it for a shop or restaurant and you can still make some money on the deal.
