Just concluded a meeting with a fellow at work and he's got a bit of a problem.  He's a track official in his spare time and uses a starter pistol.  Well, he's also into making a fashion statement so he uses a really nice S&W J-frame as his starter.  Problem is he also uses it as his CCW.  I have issues with this but that's not my problem.

Here's the problem.  He's shooting blanks that are capped off with wax and they're really fouling the J-Frame.  He insists that blanks can be crimped on the ends and that eliminates the need for the wax.  Nobody locally has the crimper, if it exists at all.  Anyone know what he's talking about?

He's one of my old supervisors from the Sheriff's Dept. and a super great guy so I thought I'd ask around for him.

You can get crimped blanks, yes.

I don't think using a real gun as a starter's pistol is a good idea, though.

A rosette crimp die is what he is looking for, they are pretty easy to find for common blank calibers but finding one for a .357/.38 won't be as easy.

ETA I found talk about a Hornady cowboy action blank crimp die that is supposed to work.

this.

I've seen crimped blanks before.

I also have reserves about using a CCW pistol as a starter pistol.

It might be easier and cheaper to just get another J-frame

I suggested an old Rossi or a real starter pistol but no, we're dead set on using the good J Frame.  My raising concerns about safety fell on deaf ears.  Odds are he'll never shoot someone that doesn't really need it but that's beside the point.  He wants crimped blanks.

A track meet is not the place to make a "fashion statement."  If I saw a race starter using a real pistol I'd be alarmed at his actions and would probably call the police, or at least complain to the race officials.  Alternating the same gun from blanks to a live ammo carry gun is a disaster waiting to happen.  For the safety of the public, he really needs to buy a starter's blank pistol.

Your friend is a fucktard who is probably going to kill someone some day.
