I want to take the form of my 30-06 4 round box magazine and see if can press some sheet metal into the same form, build a better follow and spring, and have a nice little 10-20 round box mag for my 30-06.

The rifle is a little cheapy wal-mart special (rem770) and i have no real "need" for this, just thought it be a fun project.

Anyone else ever tried it, i can't find anything in the DIY section (even using poor man's AR15.com google search).

Sounds like a cool project! Try it out, and if it works out for you, write up a DIY

You could also ask on some of the tech forums. I doubt you'll find too much info on it, as it's kind of an odd configuration, but it will be fun to try if nothing else.

I would think it would be easier to modify a 30.06 mag to work with your rifle. I need to try and make a mag for a Sako finnwolf I have

It might be easier to use the top of an existing 4 round mag so you don't have to play around getting feed lips right, make an extension box to weld between the top and bottom halves of the OEM mag, then find an M14 or similar spring, and maybe follower.

... or is the interesting part to you making something 100% improvised?

The design is very basic, and i would have no problem building a GREATLY improved follower just by taking a mold of the current one and doubling it's depth.
I don't see the steel being an issue either.  This is all "redneck garage" project, so it's not like i have an actual press, but the tolerances are pretty reasonable, and between a vice, some properly spaced boards and a good bit of banging, i think i could work something out.  If i had to get into curving the magazinge (i.e. ar and ak mags) i would be getting in over my head, but i see this coming out in the same style as an m1a/BAR style magazine.  Given the caliber, i'm tempted to see if i could retro modify a BAR magazine to fit.

This is something i considered, my welding is ugly at best and destructive at average.

I tried that years ago with a 12 gauge shotgun magazine.
It never fed properly...
