How many have died in the line of duty, i.e. during a space mission?

(Space mission is defined as the duration between the closing of the hatch, to the moment it is opened and the cosmonaut disembarks from his vehicle.)

How many Americans have died in this way?

To broaden the question a little, how many people have died during these missions? (There have been several foreigners flying for both space agencies.)

Finally, compared to the total number of astro/cosmonauts who have actually flown space missions, what's the percentage of fatalities?

Poll inbound. And fie on anyone who says, "IBTP."

A lot. I remember a thread about someone intercepting russian radio signals from failed orbit missions.

Shit like cosmonauts screaming as they decompressed and died trying to be the first to orbit.

Google "lost cosmonauts"

that should bring up some interesting info,  evidently the USSR was known to erase the history of crewmembers of failed missions.

Well, A and B.

A: in relation to your definition, let's see: Apollo 1 (3) + Challenger (7) + Columbia (7) + X-15 (1) = 18

B: But your definition is perhaps faulty because it does not include those astronauts we lost in training accidents such as Gemini astronauts See and Bassett, Freeman and Williams. It also would not include an astronaut killed on a test flight such as Joseph Walker.

It's a dangerous business and the danger isn't just being on a mission.
