| Okay arfcom computer nerds, my laptop is broken. I'm posting from my phone now. Please excuse the lack of paragraphs, I don't know how to make them on my phone. Anyway, when I hit IE on my laptop, Google is the only page that loads. If I search for something it will show the results, but won't load any of the pages. My Spybot, Avira and Super Anti Spyware have not found anything on scans. My wireless network seems to work fine with another laptop and with my phone, I'm using the WiFi right now on my phone to post this. I have reset the network by unplugging everything anyway. I connected to my neighbors WiFi with the broken laptop, same issue where only Google works. So, it looks to me that the computer is screwed up somewhere but I don't know where to start. Any advise? |

You might have a HOSTS file that's redirecting everything to Google. HOSTS files can be good or bad depending on how they're used. I use one to block spam and adware sites. I never see ads on most websites because of it. But a HOSTS file can be used to redirect your computer from any defined address to any other. They often are part of a virus or trojan program, which will keep your PC from getting to the anti-virus sites that might have a fix for the virus or trojan. Google for "HOSTS file" and it'll tell you where to find one if you do have one. You can then edit it, disable it, or delete it. CJ |
| I purchased a new computer recently that had windows 7 and it did the same thing. I was told that my old modem didn't support a 64bit system and my internet provider supplied me with a new modem and it worked fine after that. I am not sure that this helps but it made me think that my new computer was crap right out of the box. |

CJ The Host file says exactly what it should according to the website I read. This is Windows 7 by the way. |

Another useful tool, but use with extreme care. You will need somebody that knows what they are doing to look at the report it produces before selecting components to remove. http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ |

I also figured out that if I go to "tools" Reopen Last Brousing Session" I can get to arfcom. In fact, I'm posting this from the broken computer right now. This doesn't make any sense to me. I also noticed that if I do the above, I can get to the sites in my favorites. |

Because I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to deleting things from those programs, would it work if I just suck it up and re-install Windows? That's sort of like "My car might be out of gas - should I buy a new one?" Now, if you said the equivalent of "My engine has the check engine light on, blue smoke is coming out under the hood" - that's the time to think about reinstalling. You aren't there yet IMHO. Any good repair shops in the area? Or teenage computer geeks, that want a new itunes card? |
