Last time I tried to cash a USPS MO, it was for $1000. After a lot of typing on the computer, the teller said "one second let me talk to the manager" and walked off. She came back and said "you don't have $1000 in your account, so we will have to wait for it to clear" Me: But it's a Money Order, not a check....Her: That doesn't matter, you still have to have funds in your account. You will have to deposit it and see if it clears. Me: If you say soTomorrow I should be getting USPS MO's for $1200, in 2 for $600. If they pull that shit again, should I make them call the manager if they won't cash them? I want to go get a gun Saturday and don't have time to wait on it to "clear" I'm correct in thinking they are basically like cash instead of a check, right? Shouldn't they just cash them? |

You are incorrect. The bank does not issue the money order. It is an authorization for an account debit from another party (USPS). They treat them like a check.
Asking for the manager is not going to get you anywhere. If you want it cashed immediately go to a post office. They issued the MO, they can verify authenticity and cash it immediately. |

Take them to the main post office in your town. They will cash them. There have been a lot of counterfit USPS Money Orders floating around lately. |

Very SELDOM can some post offices CASH any money orders over $800 or so... They usually don't keep that much cash on hand... When I had to get a $1000 money order cashed for selling an ACOG on the EE, I had to go around to 7 post offices in the metro area and couldn't get it cashed for 3 days!!! I couldn't find a single post office with that much cash on hand until the 3rd day. And THAT post office told me they don't get that much until some time between 1 and 2:30 PM. They typically do a bank run at 3 PM at that post office. They take in cash from the local Hmong people selling & buying crap on FleaBay for a 'side job' all the time. So I went in at 2:15 PM, and they just BARELY had enough cash on hand... They paid me and I was out the door. Took 3 days and trips to several post offices to get cashed. Money orders in those amounts - good luck to you! Would be faster just depositing them at your bank and waiting. |

PO Money orders are being faked all the time. Best bet is to go to a big post office in your town in the afternoon and get them to cash them. I've had the post office not have enough money to give me the full amount for my MO, so the idea to go in the afternoon is your best bet, as long as someone else hasn't drained them of their cash. |

Another vote for "go in the afternoon". USPS employees will still bitch, but they're .gov workers and that is what they do best. Bitching about how hard their work is while not doing any. I usually end up selling stuff to finance toys. It's nice sending off that MO when I've got 6 to apply towards it and "spend" $12 on a new Glock. DP |

Will USPS have that much cash? It is better to go later in the afternoon or evening when cashing money orders. I have taken money orders (totaling over $1000) into the post office many times and they wouldn't have enough cash on hand. The ladies there always have me come back closer to closing time when they have enough money. |
But it's a Money Order, not a check....
