I'm re drywalling a 1/2 bath (sink and toilet.)

Do I need to buy the green/waterproof/midew resistant whatever it's called, or can I do regular lightweight drywall?  Couldn't find anything in the VA construction code.

I'd go with the green board even if it isn't code.

First post nailed it up.

If there's more moisture than ambient, greenboard.

Unless it's a wet wall, like a back splash or shower, it hasta be cement board.

Mostly trying to save weight since I'm doing all of this by myself.

First post.  Or moldy drywall, your choice.

Either will be just fine for a half bath. (I am a VA building official.)

What?

Syntax error.

While it may not be required by Code as stated above, 1/2 baths are usually very small.  For the couple of extra bucks, I'd use green board in the bathrooms whenever possible.  In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

Maybe this is a TX thing. I guess there is no hole punching going on with the walls at your house!

Yeah, I mean IF its a backsplash or shower, or tub surround it has to be cement board.  Green board everywhere else.

Thanks!

The 25 year old non mildew resistant drywall survived fine until I ripped it out.  Re drywalling as the builder glued the wallpaper directly to the drywall without sealing.  Despite my best efforts at steaming and chemicals, it was either going to be skim coated or replaced.  Replacement seemed like the easiest of the two options.

Green board is BS, I have seen it mold just like normal drywall, if it is truly a wet area use cement board if not use regular  board a seal it with paint.

Mold is not the only reason for green board.
