Knew a dude that used maxi-pads for insoles.  Prolly be better off getting some of that tier1 trauma clotting stuff.

Seen them used in a pinch, wouldn't carry them around though

Still see them carried in kits. You can roll up gauze to look like a tampon or just carry a tampon. They are also good for kindling.

I'm gonna buy me a still and start making moonshine.  And buy a shitload of tampons.

After TEOTWAWKI, they'll come in handy for those chicks who want to get drunk on one "serving".

I knew a medic who had a couple boxes in his truck.

He never ended up breaking them out, and I've never seen them used for that first hand, but I've been assured by a few medics that tampons will plug bullet holes.

I'd rather have an Israeli bandage personally...

could be worse. they could have them 2 weeks apart so you get to experience the joy of dealing with them twice as many times a month.

got to look on the bright side my friend.

I carry them in my 'kits'. They're great to use under bandages to soak blood and keep the dressing drier.

I've been carrying them hunting/fishing since forever. I was out fishing with a buddy once and he sliced himself open with a filet knife. Out came a tampon and duct tape, he was like then was like after I bandaged his finger up and stopped the bleeding completely.

They do work for bloody noses, I've seen they used for that, wouldnt want to plug a bullet hole with one though Israeli bandage is the way to go there.

And paintball guns.   haha     My sister was less than thrilled back in high school when I asked her for one and shot it through the barrel of which I had been shooting red paintballs.

Yes, I should buy stock in kotex.

No, they don't provide any pressure to the source of the bleed. The idea is to tightly pack the wound cavity with Kerlix type gauze directly on the source of the bleed and use an ACE wrap to add more pressure. If a tampon is all you have then it's better then nothing, but IMHO it's not worth the space.

This is a good question. I heard from my medics that a tampon plugs a bullet hole very well, and I think a few of them actually carried them, but I never heard of first hand knowledge on the topic. It seems like it might be an urban legend, but then again, it might be true.

Anyone have any first hand knowledge? As with all wives-tails, second hand knowledge and theory just wont cut it.

They are often treated with anti-coagulant.  Not the best thing for a bleeder but better than nothing if you need it.

It works as a field expedient for packing wounds, but there are better things out there for that. If all you can get is tampons, use tampons.

Going to take a bunch to get to the source of the bleed.  Plus its probably going to be a bitch to clean out when they make it to the OR.

They do make a ton of tinder for starting a fire though.

Pretty bad idea.  Maxi Pads are built to absorb blood, they won't help in stemming the flow.

OP for GSW you really should look into:

Asherman Chest Seals

Quik Clot (get some training to learn where and where not to use it)

Izzys

TQ's

Kerlix, lots of kerlix.

4x4's

3M Durapore tape

Tampons are good to carry around because sometimes ladies need them and for the really rough nose bleeds.

I don't have an opinion on the topic, but it does remind me of a funny story from my childhood.

My brother cut his head one evening and required sutures.  My mother dressed the wound with a maxi-pad and sent him to the hospital with my father.  I rode along.  My father didn't say a word and when he got to the hospital, he threw that thing away on the walk into the building.  I never understood why he did that until a few years later.

No kidding. The point was the medics couldn't get the stuff they needed, so they used what the had on hand. If you have the ability to have proper equipment on hand, have proper equipment on hand.

My step father once cut his finger pretty bad and my mom being an RN use a panty liner and some electrical tape to make a bandage until they could get somewhere to get the proper stuff.
