Worth keeping in you FAK ? Ive never plugged a hole with one. |
|
I knew a medic who had a couple boxes in his truck.
He never ended up breaking them out, and I've never seen them used for that first hand, but I've been assured by a few medics that tampons will plug bullet holes. I'd rather have an Israeli bandage personally... |

I would. they are great for when the women get their period.. My wife and daughter have their cycles at the same time. Its fucking great. could be worse. they could have them 2 weeks apart so you get to experience the joy of dealing with them twice as many times a month. got to look on the bright side my friend. |
|
I carry them in my 'kits'. They're great to use under bandages to soak blood and keep the dressing drier.
I've been carrying them hunting/fishing since forever. I was out fishing with a buddy once and he sliced himself open with a filet knife. Out came a tampon and duct tape, he was like then was like |

I see your a tampon is half full type of guy ]

Very good point |
| No, they don't provide any pressure to the source of the bleed. The idea is to tightly pack the wound cavity with Kerlix type gauze directly on the source of the bleed and use an ACE wrap to add more pressure. If a tampon is all you have then it's better then nothing, but IMHO it's not worth the space. |

This is a good question. I heard from my medics that a tampon plugs a bullet hole very well, and I think a few of them actually carried them, but I never heard of first hand knowledge on the topic. It seems like it might be an urban legend, but then again, it might be true.
Anyone have any first hand knowledge? As with all wives-tails, second hand knowledge and theory just wont cut it. |

If you look down at me at say, "yeah, we need a box of tampons", then either start clamping shit off or light me a cigar and read me a "Penthouse Letters". |

Quoted: speaking of tamps........I was never so glad when those days were over for me!! Who knew they were so versatile!!! But what are you going to pull out of your purse to treat a bullet wound now? Good luck stopping that bleeding with Certs and your car keys........ |

Quoted: I would say maxi pads would be better, but you can also get the GI surplus bandage..at least you could, and is purpose built!! Pretty bad idea. Maxi Pads are built to absorb blood, they won't help in stemming the flow. OP for GSW you really should look into: Asherman Chest Seals Quik Clot (get some training to learn where and where not to use it) Izzys TQ's Kerlix, lots of kerlix. 4x4's 3M Durapore tape Tampons are good to carry around because sometimes ladies need them and for the really rough nose bleeds. |

I don't have an opinion on the topic, but it does remind me of a funny story from my childhood.
My brother cut his head one evening and required sutures. My mother dressed the wound with a maxi-pad and sent him to the hospital with my father. I rode along. My father didn't say a word and when he got to the hospital, he threw that thing away on the walk into the building. I never understood why he did that until a few years later. |

Good point!! I have everything but the izzys and quick clot. Im BLS cert and had a few other classes in school. Since I carry the tampons for my women folk I was just wondering. |
Prolly be better off getting some of that tier1 trauma clotting stuff.
