Hello fellow shooters!
I have recently obtained a contract for cleaning Funeral Ceremony M1 Garands for a local VFW Post. These rifles have not been cleaned in at least 8 years, according to the Post Commander.

They all misfire on a regular basis, but I am set to solve these issues. As they fire blanks, these rifles are just lined to brim with powder residue but not much copper or brass fouling. I have used "Break Free Powder Blast" for years with good results, but it seems to be useless on these.

I have been working for 3 hours on one rifle, and I'm not done yet. Do any of you recommend anything else? There are ten rifles to do, and am hoping to speed this up without sacrificing results. Also, I have tried Barnes CR10 but it is not a powder solvent, so therefore, not much help either.

Thanks in advance!

The most aggressive powder fouling solvent I have used is Pro Shot Copper Solvent IV.  Yes, it sounds like it is best for jacket fouling but it aggressively dissolves powder fouling too.  It is inexpensive and comes in 8 ounce bottles.

I use the 1 ounce needle oiler bottles to dispense.  It can be washed with water, making brush cleaning simple.   Yes, it will remove copper fouling too.

GM Top Engine Cleaner and some Kroil.  Remove rifle from stock, strip down to barreled action, plug barrel, fill with TEC  and a little Kroil and let sit a little while.  Then use more of the same mixture with a nylon or brass brush.

All the above and then clean it black powder style, soap & water. Heck 8+yrs?

Yeah, not sure on reasons for such negligence, but I will be taking care of them now.

Thinking the same thing today about engine or carb cleaners at work. Will let you know.

My heavy duty go to solvent is the Barnes copper solvent.  It is ammonia based, and everything needs to be re-oiled when finished.
