This is for the computer guys, I guess.
My sister logged into the home network and posted to facebook from her phone. The geographical location of the post was logged as somewhere in Virginia (Tyson's Corner). We queried various "get directions" to Virginia addresses. This morning I ran Traceroute to AR15.com and the route ran down through Washington and back up to upstate New York. WTF, over?. Any ideas what would cause this? ETA: Last 3 hops in Virginia were: 4.68.111.137 4.69.138.222 4.69.132.89 |

The geographical location could be due to an outdated IP list from her ISP. There isn't a GPS in her home router to tell the rest of the Internet where it's sitting. Someone in the ISP manually subnetted its network out, and any changes since then could make the list outdated.
The traceroute going south before going north could be due to network design. You don't design in individual routes everywhere. ISPs aggregate their circuits, so you're more efficient. |
