Are they worth it? I see dozens available on Craigslist. Do these people just get tired of them, or are they crap?

If you score one cheap, then it's cheap and who cares.

Some people say they like them...

I reckon those people haven't ever used a universal.

Universals can be found cheap as well, I'd highly recommend that over stupid plastic bands and a slidey seat.

My BIL has one and I like it but they are expensive. I bought a Bandflex about 7 or 8 years ago and I really like it. No problems. Google Band flex home gym. They run about $250 and I think I got free shipping or very low cost shipping.

Edit: The Bowflex uses some sort of graphite bars.

I hear they make a great place to hang your laundry on.

The dude and chicky snack in the ads probably spent a shit load of time in the gym using free weights and have a daily diet of a chicken breast, a carrot, and a celery stick.

Are you saying the slidey seat didn't rip them abs?

They all work.  Continued motivation is the only thing you need.

I had one for years. The above two statements are very true. Unless you're extremely motivated I would go to a bare bones gym. Mine cost me $12 per month, no snack bar, showers, or frills. Just machines and bathrooms/changing areas.

I'd rather invest that money into a home gym.

First year, buy your weights. Second year, your elliptical.

Buy quality, buy once, have a lifetime membership, privacy, nobody else's ballbag on your sink, and so on.

Unless you simply have no space. That's the only way I can see paying for gym memberships.

I got in the best shape of my life with one and a treadmill.

Had a series of 20 exercises I would do....3x 30 reps just just a LITTLE too much weight for me to handle and every time my strength gave out and I could no more I would jog or even sprint there at the end for 5-10 minutes. As soon as the timer hit back to the bowflex it was.  If my muscles were only strong enough to do another 2 or 3 sets then back to the treadmill it was.  It was hardcore, but it also took me a while to get to that point physically.

It's also fucking crazy when going from a fat ass to being in good shape how shallow people really are (not just the basic looks or interactions in public either).....even people you have known for years all of the sudden now you are worth their time and they are into you. (talking of girls you are friend zoned with, but now they want your dick)  It was a huge wake up call and took a while to filter them out of my life.

I still use it from time to time, but i'm in kind of a rut.  I really like them even though there are a lot of people who refuse to get off of free weights.

In the end IMO lifting weight is lifting weight and when done properly is going to work out for you no matter what you use.

Buy the 300 lb barbell weight set from academy (Edit) this one

Find a used power rack on craigslist, and a bench

buy this book Rippetoe

That is all you need.

Slowly build up a collection of DB, resistance bands, and kettlebells.

Order it all using a Prime Membership from Amazon.  Much cheaper than the local sporting goods store.

Also, it's fun to watch the UPS person struggle with a relatively small kettlebell that weighs 78 lbs.

Bowflex (used of course) is a great way to determine if you have the willpower to stick with it.  It is not a bad work out and can be had quite cheap on craigslist.

True, but if you add pullups and squats you have enough to keep the novice going for their first year.

Bowflex is a great machine, follow the workout that the mfg. recommends. You will not get bulky, but it is a great way to get toned up and is a good cardio workout. I picked up a basically unused Bowflex XLT for 200 bucks on CL, it also came with every possible add on for that model.

I found a used Bowflex Ultimate Home Gym at a local Goodwill that I hit from time to time.  I told my Wife about it and she wanted to take a look at it.  $400 - complete with everything it originally came with (leg extension unit, all belts, clips, manuals, videos, etc) in perfect condition.

We bought it.  Everyone in the house has been pretty good about using it a few days a week.  At $400, it was worth it for us - YMMV
