I am going to man up aland start shaving with a straight razor. I see there are lots of brands out there. From the reviews I have seen amerkur seems to be a good brand for a razor.  Is there another brand I need to consider?  Where is a good place to buy the equipment?  Any particular oils or soaps to get?

Thanks for the help.

I thought I saw a shaving section on here one time, brutish don't see it now.

Nothing stainless.  It'll probably need to honed even if they claim it's "shave ready."

Start here: http://whippeddog.com/ and get an inexpensive, but perfectly usable straight to try out before you shell out the big bux. I have worked up to doing almost my whole face with a straight.

Also, lots of info here: www.badgerandblade.com

A straight razor or a safety razor?  I don't think Merkur makes straights.

Actually I don't think they do either.

I was just being a spelling Nazi above, because I thought maybe he thought the company was named "Amerkur."

Yes, I wasn't thinking when I typed that.  I meant a safety razor.  Sorry about that.

Plenty of good used ones on eBay. I used a Shick Krona until I found my '60 Gillette Fatboy at a gun show for $13.

As far as blades, get a sample pack and try them out. My favorite is Shark followed by Feather.

Open razors are hard as hell to get good with.  I carved my face up like a cheap ham the first few tries.
It was ugly.
Uglier.

I would recommend buying one of the cheap quasi-disposable ones that you can load with a double edge blade and practice a LOT before investing in the whole kit.  Good open razors require a lot of technique to use, and even to keep sharp.

Just buy good blades, I go with Feathers from Japan, some of the best around.

Safety razors are a whole different breed.
Check out mine, I love it.

You might check maxtonmen.com out for safety razors.  They recently added them and have a sale going on now as well.
