I live in a state where bed bug infestations are on the rise in movie theaters, hotels, and public transportation.  A lot friends that visit me take public transportation and I'm a huge movie buff... lately I have been thinking about being proactive to any sort of "visitations" from these little creatures.

What are the best ways to protect one's home from an infestation?

I've bought mattress and box spring covers... what's next?  Diatomaceous Earth and residual pesticides... where is the most effective place to use these?

I rented a house one summer. About a week after we moved in the bed bugs began to tear me up.

The bites itch as bad and last as long as fire ant bites, only the bed bugs will get you dozens of times in a single night.

They treated the place with diatomaceous earth. While it seemed effective, I'm sure i'll get lung cancer from breathing that stuff in for weeks on end.

My advice: try not to get them in the first place. FWIW, I've since seen bed bugs between the seat cushions of a subway car. I now prefer to stand.

DDT.  Find some and use it.

I just went through an infestation.

Personally, I don't react much to the bites.  If you are concerned about it, take off your clothes and IMMEDIATELY wash them in hot water and dry them TWICE.

Covers on beds are great, but still give places for new bugs to hide.  When you treat with DE, put it under the mattress  and don't vacuum it up.  Really worried?  Put bowls under the legs of your bed, heavy enough  that they won't shatter when you sit on them.  Dust them with DE to make yourself feel better.
