I want to buy and build a lab to play around with, while I'm attending school. I already have access to equipment at school 24/7. We use net labs and we can configure Routers from home.

Since I'm learning all the Cisco stuff, I found this on ebay:
CCNA Lab on Ebay

Is this a decent start kit?

I do have a laptop or a stand alone PC I can console into the system.

Looks good for cooking meth.

But buying older CISCO hardware off ebay is what lots of folks do to learn and prep for exams.

There are some CISCO IOS simulators out there which allow you to get hands on with the IOS, but I don't know how versatile they are in terms of allowing freedom to play between devices.

Nice at that price!

The IOSs are a bit dated by 97% of the commands will work just fine on the current versions. The basic functions are the same so I'd buy it!

Save the money (not to mention desk space and power) and download GNS3.  All that's missing is an IOS image.

I currently use Packet Tracer, as well.

If you have a beefy enough machine to run it on, GNS3 is great.
