Anyone know if there are any viruses yet that can escape form a virtual machine to the host system?

Not that I have heard.  Just don't cross-contaminate by moving files off the virtual machine onto the base system.

Is the VM hooked to the network?
if so then yes it can spread..

My VM is on my home network but it is the only Windows computer on the network.   I'm not really worried about anything, I was just wondering.  I have not heard of it yet, but I've always thought that since virtualization is just software, then it could be compromised.

Exactly.  Especially if they're on the same subnet.

Just use 255.255.255.257 for the VM. Problem solved.

But seriously, keep your VM off the subnet for the host machine if you are using it as a burner.

If the virus is capable of spreading over a network through the use of exploits in vulnerable network applications running on the host, sure. It's also possible if you're sharing folders between the host and guest, and you have write permissions on the host share.

Don't take for granted that there are not virii that can infect your OS.  No matter what that OS is there is something that can get to it.

Agreed.  And I am not aware of any malware that can transverse through the actual type one or type two hypervisor.
