Trying to get a "technician" at a remote location to do a simple ping command.

The guy goes "what's a ping command?"

Anyone in the Ft. Lauderdale area? Lol

He needs to test the power supply, ask him if he has a fork handy.

I'm thinking he needs to hit the nearest freeway and pretend he's a traffic cone.

One ping only, please.
Depends on what kind of technician, though.  I know guys who run and splice fiber all day that don't know a thing about networking.  But they are damn good at pulling cable and wiring a fiber cabinet.

At least he/she/it doesn't start conversations with: "Hey did you see that I pinged you earlier about...."

We get IT "consultants" in all the time

I usually have to show them how to do basic computer administration tasks

Pardon me for saying so but, the person you're describing is not, in fact, an "IT professional" by any definition of which I'm aware.

I've taken 20 cases apart and I haven't found a single dollar bill in any of them.  Someone's been lying to me.

I did find a few dust buffaloes and a hubcap for a 73 Gremlin, once.

ETA: I lied about the hubcap. NO, I don't have one, and NO, don't IM me about!

I have a vendor I work with regularly who cannot use VPN.  The entire concept is totally foreign to them.

They also regularly request changes to my firewall policy so they can access the server but they can't seem to ask for the right thing.  Telnet might as well be ancient Greek to them.

I am ranting at myself tonight.  Going to be a long night of building a new file/print server, restoring data, and then arguing with DFS about the new share member.

I ought to be at work building a Postfix server tonight instead of sitting here surfing Arfcom and waiting for the pizza guy.

Computer user rant:

"I need MS Office 2007 or 2010 and Access '97 on the computer.  We have an important DB that will not run on the newer Access versions."

He delivered the computer with MS 2007 and added Access 2007..................

I called my logistics tech, he gave me the location to the install file I needed and I had '97 installed in 10 minutes.........

Ooooooooh the stories I could tell about remote access issues from India teams to US resources.
