[ARCHIVED THREAD] - .40 hate? (Page 1 of 4)

I have only owned 9's and 45's, and liked them, but I wasn't happy with 9, and 45 was too expensive.

Now I have a .40, and it seems like the perfect combination. It's more powerful than 9, but not so expensive as 45,

plus it has good capacity.

So why does it seem like people don't like .40?

From what I have been able to find, it is more effective than 9 and 45, if only marginally.

So what gives?

..40 is more expensive than 9mm and nowhere near as good as a .45.  It is much ado about nothing.

I like it. Plenty of LEOs, from the FBI down to my local PD like it.  My EDC(s) are .40.

*shrug*

Cue "You're gonna get raped".jpg.
My department has used them for over a decade.  No problems killing dogs or people.  That being said, I've seen the ballistic gel.  I went .45, and I'm never going back.  I only lose 2 rounds per mag going from .40 to .45.

I have to agree here. I shoot 147gr loads through my 9mm and they perform almost as well as .45 loads. .40 just seems like an answer in search of a question.

.40 love here...three Glocks and one Sub2K all in .40

How is it not near as good as .45?

Not being a dick, I just want some concrete evidence.

Because some dudes think you're stupid if your gears don't operate exactly as theirs do...

ETA: I don't own a .40, and probably never will.  Your caliber selection is your call, not mine.

I'm just sick of hearing "know anywhere I can get some .40?"

OP, i agree and if you get bored. Get a 357sig and a 10mm(if frame permits) barrell and blasst away.

Is this chart not accurate or something? .40 seems to do pretty well

Another nice thing is that a lot of times wal-mart is out of 9mm and .45, but they always have plenty of .40

[#13]
I choose the .40 after researching ballistic tables. Then, made my final decision after learning my local sherrif dept. switched to .40 from 9...9's didn't seem to stop meth heads effectively.

I'm confident .45 is a fine round...I just choose .40...

I've picked up a .40 because ammo is plentiful.  You can get some great bargains on bulk JHP ammo now.

[#15]
Part I like about shooting .40 is there is always a shitload of brass left on the range for free.
2/9/2012 8:56:52 AM EDT
[#16]
I guess it depends on your attitude.

I don't like comprimises, so I like 9mm and .45.  On occassions where I can carry anything I use a .45.  If magazine capacity is a concern then I use a 9mm with 18-20rd mags.

To a person with my outlook on life, .40 is the worst of both worlds.  If you are a glass is half full kind of guy it is the best of both worlds.

Got a lot of pistols, ain't none of them .40.

I don't hate .40 but it's not my preferred caliber when looking for a pistol. I sway more towards .45 and 9.

Don't bring logic and facts into a 9 vs .40 vs .45 thread. What's the matter with you?

75% of the time I was able to .40 during the ammo shortage while 9 and .45 were never on the shelf.

I have all three calibers, I'm still undecided as to which I like best.

It seems like you want a .40, so go get one.  There's nothing WRONG with the round, despite what people here say.  I'd avoid getting a Glock in that caliber because in my opinion, they are a little snappy compared to the .45ACP's.  Maybe I'm just crazy.  Either way, its like the AR vs. AK debate.  You really can't go wrong with either 9, .40, or 45, IMO.

Short answer is people tend to be set in their ways.  Nothing wrong with the .40, but people have egos, and those egos tend to defend those ways.  9mm and 45 have been around a lot longer and no amount of evidence will sway a fanboi away from either.

I already have one, a gen 4. It's not snappy, the new recoil spring is as big around as my thumb

It doesn't seem to be any better than 9mm and it is more expensive.

If you want to stop meth heads shoot them in the face and do all of society a favor.

The only "Fo-tay" caliber I own starts with a 10 in the description.

Ballistics, how do they work?
2/9/2012 9:02:57 AM EDT
[#27]
not here. One of my EDCs is a .40 (USPc).

I'm carrying it for me, not for the herd.  The herd can carry what they want.

[#28]
I have several in each caliber.  I usually carry a 9mm but my home defense pistol is a Glock in .40.  I buy reloads from a nearby shop at $200 per 1000 with my brass so it is almost the same price as practicing with my 9mm. The .40 Federal 180 grain HST is almost as good as a .45 in expansion so I don't feel too bad about it.  If I can figure out how to carry my .45 concealed then that would be my preferred carry piece.
The .40 caliber can't be that bad if so many police departments use it.  My friend is a federal agent and they carry .40 so that is good enough reason for me.

[#29]
Anymore the performance differences between 9, 40 and 45 have closed to the point being marginal and not worth fixating on.

From there, figure out which one you shoot best and fits your budget and plan accordingly.

I have used Glock 23/27 for years but am slowly switching over to 9s, for what its worth.

2/9/2012 9:06:02 AM EDT
[#30]
I have an XDM40 and a SA 1911 GI. Like them both. I use the 40 for bulk practice and competitions for USPSA. 45can be a little on the pricey side, but I usually only use it for a carry piece and practice. I like the .40S&W especially since alot of depts picked it up. Lots of free range brass from LEO practice. I reload, so I don't usually have to worry about if the local walmart is out of what I shoot.

All that being said, you have some stubborn people who won't even look at a 40. Just the way they are.

It's not the terminal ballistics of the 40 that gets the hate. Not everyone can shoot it well quickly. Sharp recoil makes follow up shots relatively more difficult than 9 or 45.

.40 seems to be a fad.

With the right choice of ammunition a 9mm will do just as much damage.

Do as you may, I'll be getting a 9mm soon to compliment my 45.

This.  I shoot a 9mm and .45 much better than I do my .40.  But then again, that gives me a challenge....

I think this on point. The 1st .40 I ever shot was a Berretta 96  it really gave me my opinion about .40.

I don't know about that. Around here during the last shortage my .40 was the only thing I could count on being able to get at the nearest wal-mart or gun store reliably. 9mm was non-existant and .45 was rare at best, about as bad as .380acp for awhile. I have nothing against .40 but I kinda like all of the calibers so take that FWIW.

Seems to me I just like guns and don't worry about caliber, just quality of ammo for daily carry and they're all fine in that dept. The rest is up to me.

This is a big part of the reason why I'm making the switch. I'm finding my Glock 23s, converted over to 9, are significantly easier to shoot, than the 40s.

Now I'll I have to do is find someone who's looking to sell me a Gen2/3 G19 for less than a billion dollars and I'll have a new carry piece.

The only .40 I've shot is a gen 4 glock, and it's not bad. I'm making a gen4 35 my bedside gun, I doubt it will kick hardly at all.

Whenever I look at this pic, I become more an more convinced that there is no real difference between the service calibers.  At one time or another over the years, I've carried them all on duty, including .38Spl and .357Mag.  I was never poorly armed, even when the department required I use a revolver and the issued .38+p.

Mostly carry 9mm now, it's cheaper.

I have several .40s, a couple 9mms and no .45

Astonishngly, I get along just fine. I never really got behind the "sharp recoil" stuff. My controlled pairs splits between 9/40 are nearly identical...I'd wager it has more to do with being very comfortable with my gun which are .40 caliber.

My main reason, and it's the smallest caliber to make major in limited class.

I have owned them and just don't like them. Every .40 I have owned I wished I had got the 9mm or .45 version instead.

Had an XD .40, sold it and got a .45
Had a Sub2000 in 40, it stung my cheek and capacity was crap. Sold it and got the 9mm.
Had a glock 40. Got rid of it and got a 9mm, and a 10mm.

Just pick one of the three and you'll be fine.  Any way you go on average you'll need three bullets to stop a bad guy.  I think I would go with 40 or 9 just because of that.  Note to the 45 guys I own one and shoot it too.  I reload for all three and sometimes buying lead ammo for my 45 is cheaper than buying 9 and 40 jacketed ammo.  I'd just rather have more ammo in a self defense situation because you never know how many bad guys there are.
