Woot Deal... Monday, Jan 30th, 16 Chan DVR + 8 cameras
Since you gentlemen know I'm always looking out for you... Woot deal like the bolded line says. Probably worth it if you're looking for a system-in-a-box deal. Most of what you're paying for there is the DVR, which is probably worth the sale price all by itself. |

Ive been looking for a system and im seriously thinking about buying this right now. Is this a good deal? Can i run 100' wire from the hard drive out to the garage and just plug everything in without any issues? Also, do i need a seperate computer to get this to stream live to the internet or my phone or can i just set up the hard drive/recorder deal to transmit through my wi fi router? |

I'd say yes Can i run 100' wire from the hard drive out to the garage and just plug everything in without any issues? Most of these camera systems include only 60ft of cable with each camera, you can purchase 100ft extensions or just use the 100ft extension as your only cable. Also, do i need a seperate computer to get this to stream live to the internet or my phone or can i just set up the hard drive/recorder deal to transmit through my wi fi router? No PC needed, they have an ethernet port on the back, all you have to do is allow two TCP and two UDP port numbers for access anywhere. You can also use another computer inside you local network to view the cameras. I put in a lot of these style systems and they work very well. The cameras they come with are pretty good but usually aren't wide enough angles. I buy just the systems and buy wide angle cams seperate. |

That seems like a smokin' deal. I assume you could just upgrade 2-3 critical area cameras as you go right? Yeh, you'll probably be pretty unimpressed with the quality of the included cameras - Typically, they have a very narrow field of view that's only really suitable for covering entryways, narrow hallways or other small areas. For covering large outdoor areas, a different camera is almost essential. However, camera upgrades aren't particularly expensive - Many of 'em can use the original camera's cables, so it's an easy swap. |

Record Resolution:NTSC: CIF (352 x 240) / PAL Typically, the record resolution and frame rate both depend on how many channels are being recorded simultaneously. Fewer channels = higher resolution and more frames per second. On low-cost DVRs, a maximum resolution in the range of 704 x 480 is typical. |

Ok, im going to buy one of these things.
But basically i can upgrage one or two ofthe cameras to at least a 740x620 ish resolution camera and plug them right in? Also, i can set this thing up to motion detection mode and it will alert my cell phone every time something moves in my house while im gone right? |

You can do that with a 80 dollar IP camera from China. I prefer IP setups versus analog, but my needs are probably different than most. When you do get a setup, camera placement is the most critical thing to consider IMO, virtually everyone puts these things up high somewhere. There should be a portion of the cameras placed at shoulder level to capture faces, it seems all dirtbags wear a hoodie or ballcap nowadays. A camera setup for license plate capture is something to think about too. |

Anyone know what size the drive is on the $99 one on the regular Woot site?

You might be better off slaving a PIR sensor to trigger the cell phone message. Check the big CCTV thread... I put up some relevant stuff this weekend. |

I'd never run email alerts at night. Motion detection is hit and miss. Motion on the cameras is often identified by a change in pixels. So drafts, clouds, rain, etc can cause enough motion to set off the camera. A passive infra-red (PIR) sensor looks for moving heat and will be less prone to false positives. |

But basically i can upgrage one or two ofthe cameras to at least a 740x620 ish resolution camera and plug them right in? They'll work - and you may see some improvement in resolution when looking at "live" images on your monitor, but if the DVR's maximum recording resolution is only 352 x 240, you won't see much improvement in the resolution when you play back images recorded with your new cameras. They'll still play back in just 352 x 240 resolution. |

The recording resolution looks like it goes higher... but that will probably cut the Max combined frame-rate to 120FPS... which is still pretty fair if you're not using all 16 channels. |

I got the same thing (minus the drive) last month.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1270460_Zmodo_8_Channel_Surveillance_System_with_8_Weatherproof_IR_Cameras_on_WOOT_for__169_99.html Picked up a 500Gb drive for under a c note and got it all set up. Impressions: Mouse is a joke. The rest is pretty cool. Night time isn't seeing much if anything, but then again I wasn't expecting anything unless the lights are on. Motion sensor lighting is good for this. I havent hooked it up to the computer for net, but its capable. Also has smart phone apps so you could remote in to it. If you dont have one and want video, then its a good deal. If your looking for bank quality then your not going to be impressed. |
| As someone who spends too much time looking at such things, this is one hell of a deal. That price point, the amount of cameras, extra channels, and the terabyte drive make it an absolute steal. Great starter package for anyone looking to secure the home front. |

I suspect you're correct. IMO, resolution beats frame rate, any day of the week. I'd gladly take just a few frames of really detailed video per second over several dozen fuzzy frames per second... |

That's EXACTLY right. Choppy video with quality individual frames beats the hell out of fluid poor-quality video. You simply can't do anything with the latter, whereas the former might provide a clear individual frame that gives you that critical face-shot or plate-view. ETA: in other words, when it comes to frame-rate, less-is-more, particularly if you're sacrificing video quality for frame-rate. That's a bad trade. |

Looks like I missed out anyone gota link to what the deal was? That's the thing with Woot... their business model is basically "one day, one deal." It runs from midnight-to-midnight central time, and goes to that time limit, or until the item sells out. It's one of those deals where you have to catch it on THAT DAY. I don't know any way to link to the previous day's deal. |

Just be glad you're not crawling around in an attic during the middle of the summer...
If ya gotta do it, ain't no better time than winter to get it done! Truth! In the summer, I have to do most of my wire-pulling at night. Daytime is literal heat-stroke territory. |
