Do you frequently use any form of online instant messenger/chat? Facebook messenger...Yahoo messenger...AIM.... I dislike. This is a poor form of communication, I've decided. Sending links and facts are fine, but when it comes to having a real conversation or discussing something of importance, I've concluded instant messenger is not an option. I just tried to have a discussion with a female friend, and this turned into a ridiculous, overdrawn spat, and now I'm in what-the-hell-why-did-that-even-happen/shock mode. I partially blame talking online, because you can't hear tones, sarcasm, or laughter, and you can't see expressions, etc. etc. No more for me please! |

I'm talking to several people through Steam's IM service right now. With one person I'm just bouncing back stupid links, with another I'm shooting the shit, with another discussing a game... I'm also sitting in a voice chat server, so I'm talking to several others personally.
It's perfectly fine for conversations, especially multiple ones at once. being able to throw in links at will is nice, and I don't really want to talk on the phone. |

I prefer using MSN/Live. My phone calls typically last 30 seconds. You realize you can use voice chat + text (which is clearer than most cell phones) in MSN/LIVE, Yahoo ect. right? I also like being able to send files/pictures/links.
My rule is that you have to type in proper English (or at least attempt it). If you type "cell phone text" style, then I won't bother talking as I hate that. |

Oh yeah, the reason why we were chatting online in the first place was because her phone got shut off. Lame everything. ![]() |

Like a phone, but on your computer. Get a micophone, start a call. Skype is better for voice though. Did I mention it is free? Both the programs and the calls. Talk for 5 hours straight, while sending photos through Windows Live or Skype or other files. And it won't cost you a cent. |

Ha, I should have consulted Arfcom DURING/BEFORE my conversation with said friend...then we could have done the voice chat thing, and perhaps all would have gone swimmingly. Unfortunately she abruptly signed off before the fact, steaming, I'm sure. Great. |
| I used to use AIM and Xfire back when I was playing a lot of games and such on the PC. Rarely now do I ever use IM services. I do use skype from time to time to talk to my nephew who's overseas in the Navy a lot, he's back here now, for now. Skype allows voice and video chat, awesome for relatives/friends that are a long ways away. |

I use Google Talk a lot. I can IM on the computer, then continue the conversation on my phone. Also, all my conversations are conveniently stored in a searchable database for Google's sinister plots my convenience. I have thousands of pages of conversations dating back to 2006... |

I have no idea how good they are these days as I don't use them. I'm sure the $60-70 ones these days will look pretty good though. Just about every laptop since 2008 has had a webcam build in to. A decent mic can be had for $40. |
