Let me set the the mood for you:

You're on a 2-lane highway at night and you are going up a hill. Although you can't yet see the car coming at you, you know there's one on the other side of the hill because you can see the light from his highbeams getting ready to crest the hill. You turn your highbeams off and expect to see him do the same. He doesn't. He waits until he crests the hill and they're right in your eyes before clicking them off.

This seems to happen more and more to me. I know that sometimes we forget they're on and need a friendly doubletap from oncoming traffic to remind us, but these people KNOW they're on but choose to wait until they've blinded me before turning them off.

I just don't like that. That is all. Happy 2012.

A very long time ago, I had a pickup decked out with off-road lights.  I was driving down a dark road, and a car came around a curve up ahead.  I turned off my high beams.  He didn't.  I flashed my high beams.  Nothing.  I turned my highs back on.  Nothing.  So I hit the offroad lights.  I still have the image burned into my brain... as I passed him, I could see all four wheels locked up, white smoke coming off, and the driver with both arms crossed over has face.  Dumb?  Sure, I was a kid.  But I'll bet you he learned to turn off his high beams for oncoming traffic.

If that keeps happening, your beams are adjusted too high.  Fix them.  Your lights are "annoying as hell" to everyone else, which is why they're flashing you, you dolt.  Nobody is saying, "Oh, hey, that car up ahead in the dark... that's jtstock, let's fuck with him, let's flash our high beams just because we know it annoys him!"

I hit the low beams when I think they are close enough to where my high beams may distract them.

What's the matter with just muttering, "fuck off, those aren't my high beams" and flashing them so they realize it?

If it happens all the time, your beams might need to be adjusted.

I used to love night driving, but the older I get I can't hardly do it anymore. It's largely because these damn headlights are so bright anymore (even the low beams) and the worst is when somebody rides your ass for several miles with their lights glaring in your mirrors. That night/day adjustment only gives me a slightly duller double image. I usually end up pulling off if it's a 2 lane and just letting them pass.

This annoys me as well as the dipshits with the HIDs that don't have them installed correctly and blind the shit out of everyone. Not every car is set up to have them. The newer cars that already have them have a design that cuts the light before it gets too high on a vehicle
most people don't have a vehicle that does that so it just blind the shit out of everyone and if they do that i leave my high beams on until i pass them.

I'm with you OP.  Fucking assholes.  The worst are those people casually cruising down the road that seem to be oblivious to the fact that they have their high beams on and everybody is flashing them.

I have off-road KC lights on my Jeep and Truck to help people bright-lighting me understand that I'm flashing them.  A couple of the LEO buddies I work out with share this pet peeve with us.  They routinely pull people over for not dimming their lights, and often times those people are somehow impaired (either alcohol or drugs).  I'm told pulling people over for not dimming their high beams often time leads to an arrest.

You sure about that ?  Did you get on a level ground and check the alignment and aim ? Did your vehicle have any sort of fender bender ? The repair shops usually forget to align the lights. Did you ever replace the bulbs with something other than stock ?

As you can tell, this is a big pet peeve of mine.  Especially in a miata, i get blinded all the time.  1 out of maybe 100 will actually turn off their light when behind me at a stop light and i thank them profusely( thumbs up out the window). Most of the time i have to turn on my brights, which are really fucking bright Hella E-codes with  65watt bulbs, then they might get the hint. You're okay with blinding the other guy, so now you've got two blinded motorists running around on the road?

Maybe your eyes are more sensitive than mine, maybe folks are running around with some seriously badass headlights in your neck of the woods, but really, oncoming high beams don't impair me to the point where I can't see where I'm going or what I'm doing.

Sure, it's rude and inconsiderate, but hey, most folks these days are inconsiderate assholes.  Thus is life, it doesn't really accomplish anything getting all worked up about it.

Two wrongs don't make a right, and all, be my luck I flip my highs on so I can be Billy Badass and show that oncoming driver just what a dick he is, and blinded from the glare, he drifts into my lane and hits me head on, kills me dead.

Sometimes when you meet people in a curve, especially on a hill, one car's lowbeams can shine right at the other car's driver, making them think the first driver's brights are on if they don't realize what's happening.
