So I have a computer with XP home on it basic rundown is:
P4
1.5G ram
CD-rw
usb support

It's like 5 years old or so would be my guess.

I am trying to put linux on it, but cannot get the install CD or the USB to install.  Without any media in it the comuter boots and runs windows just fine, but when I load the install CD I burned I just get the "No OS found" message.

The CD was burned using Roxio and I was able to make an install DVD just fine for my other laptop, but I can't make a CD for some reason.

Now the computer that I want to put Linux on has a burner with Nero 6, but when I make a bootable CD with Nero 6 and the image it boots to DOS and I don't know how to run the image at the prompt or if I can.

Any suggestions.  Maybe there is a free burner that will burn the image I can put on the computer I want linux so that the same drive is burning its own CD?

Maybe I will just keep windows on it, but I was hoping for a little home server.

Thanks,

Can you browse the CD from within Windows? You could try Wubi.

I can browse that and run WUBI, but it doesn't seem to have an install process associated with it.  It just tells me to reboot with the CD in the tray and all will be taken care of.

I've had bad luck burning Ubuntu ISOs to disk.  I went through three downloads and burns before I got one that would boot with 11.04.

It could be the media, too... years ago, when I was a lot more into burning DVDs, there was a forum where people discussed the different brands of media and someone kept a running list of which was best and worst.

Same thing with burners... I don't know how much it's true today, but back in the day some burners were just miserable POSes.  You needed the right burner, installed the right way (in ATAPI days, on it's own channel), the right chipset drivers, the right media, the right software...

OP, can you burn good CDs/DVDs otherwise?  Can you burn your Ubunto disc on a different machine?

Burn the iso to USB if you can boot to USB on the desktop.

I did the same thing as you putting 11.10 on my laptop and desktop.

I couldn't boot to usb on the desktop so I had to burn an iso to disc.

I just followed the directions on the dl site to a T.

Are you using cdrw's? maybe your desktop cant read them.

If you can't get ubuntu, try mint, seems to be an easier, more complete package for new users.

Try burning with imgburn, I've always had good luck with it.

If I were you I would focus on getting the USB install to work.  On my old Toshiba laptop I could never successfully burn an ISO to disk.  I could do it on my other computer but I could never get the old Toshiba to spit out a functioning disk so I think some burners just don't have the reliability necessary to burn an entire ISO file.

Try UNetbootin to make a bootable USB drive.  You have checked to make sure your BIOS can boot from USB right?

Also I assume you have checked the checksums for the ISO you downloaded right?

InfraBurner is GPL and will burn ISO's for you.

When booting the computer, go into Setup and check to see if the CD player is one of the devices that it can boot from.  Same with USB.  Could be you're set up to only boot from the hard drive.

I've found burning the disc at the lowest speed sometimes helps.

I used "InfraRecorder" to burn cd's for the last 3 versions of Ubuntu - they worked fine on a Shuttle PC.
