Getting ready to buy a used car that has about 6k left on the original warranty. The dealer is also offering an extended service contract. Price is  about 1k for 36k/36 months , iirc.

Worth it or a gimmick? Ant thoughts on what to look out for?

They don't sell them with the intent to lose money.

Crap shoot. You bet that your car falls apart. They bet it won't.

If it is a factory backed plan probably ok. Some of the aftermarket plans can turn into a hassle.

One repair these days can pay for the whole plan.

What kind of car, and what kind of plan.

Most of the time it is a waste of your money. I have heard that if you buy a used ford from a ford dealership they do have a good ford backed extended service contract but it is usually not the one that is offered first.

Car is a 2008 BMW 328i.   Not sure if it's a
factory backed plan or not....

Find out.

If it's an extension of the factory warranty, then yes, I'd jump on it.

If not, find out who the warranty is from and do some research.  What is actually covered?  Do they pay promptly, or challenge everything?

If it's not factory backed forget it. If the vehicle model has a high number of known problems THAT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY and is expensive to repair, then it may not be a bad idea. Make sure it doesn't have "stipulations" like "only if all dealer maintenance and scheduled services are done and documented" clauses. For a typical repair cost vehicle, they are seldom worth it, just put the money aside you'd spend on one for any repairs, for expensive "luxury brands," I guess it's more of a crapshoot to get one or not.

Bought the car. It's a 2008 BMW 328i with about 8k left on the factory warranty. Looks and drives brand new and service records seem to be up to snuff. Skipped the extended service contract.....it was offered at $4500 for 24 months/ 24000 miles and started the moment I bought the car so essentially I would have paid $4.5K for 16000 miles of coverage.

The service was offered by "Fidelity Warranty Services".....183 customer complaints in the last 3 years. Customer feedback is that they basically will not fix ANYTHING that is considered fair wear and tear. EVERYTHING apparently is fair wear and tear according to their customer feedback.

I got one throug my credit union that extended to 100,000 miles for $2,000. That thing really worked for us. Our 2005 Tahoe had the entire front suspension system replaced, the entire A/C unit relaced, and then something else in the dash replaced. It saved us a boat load of money. It was easy to work with too. We never had any problems with the company. Just called them up and told them what was wrong, and the answer everytime was " Take it to the shop, and have them send us the bill." No fuss and no worry.
