I am looking for a new multitool pliers. I've had many over the years and never liked the leathermans.

I carried a Buck Bucktool 360 for almost ten years and loved the way it opened and everything about it. Then I lost it, probably in a couch somewhere like all my other knives.

I can't find a place to buy a new bucktool so what do you guys carry?

Still makes the best multi-tools by far. BY FAR.

I own a SOG, a Gerber and five Leathermans.

I speak from lots of experience.

Gerber.  Gets it done without being ridiculously expensive.

And you can actually open all the tools in it without having to find a separate screwdriver.

Gerber is an inferior tool. The engineers smoke crack. The problem is in the design. When torquing with the pliers and they slip they will crush the skin on your hand to the point of tears and speaking in tongues while rolling around on the floor like a holy roller.

My pair was summarily destroyed with a 10lb sledge hammer after I came to and was coherent and level headed.

Leatherman is all fucked up on their politics. Nonetheless, the Wave is probably the finest multitool ever made.

I have owned and used extensively, Gerbers, Leatherman and other less expensive models over the last 20 + years.

The gerber multi-tools issued by the Army make baby Jesus cry.

i got a Gerber multi tool 600 with the attachment set for christmas from mama it looks pretty damn solid, and ive already used it to put some things together and get the cork out of a wine bottle

that being said, it still doesn't hold a candle to my Schrade....had it for well over 12 years now and its never let me down!

If the politics don't bother you, leatherman all the way. In my experience they are usually better thought out than other multitools. If you don't want to support leatherman, I'd go with some type of swisstool. They are well made and pretty well done, I just wish the screwdrivers were better. I have about the same feelings on SOG multitools. The only gerber I've owned was an MP600 and whille it wasn't bad, it didn't really fit my requirements. If it matters currently I carry a leatherman core and have for several years.

i have only owned a gerber(and a few of those el-cheapo $10 rigs). i dont really have any complaints about the gerber, but i dont use it often, nor do i carry it. if i need a tool, i will hit the toolbox, not the multitool.

I added a poll.  I haven't even thought about SOG, and the leatherman Wave looks cool.  I didn't think this would be a hot topic.

Most people give me a confused look and ask why I would carry a pair of pliers in my pocket... As I am using it for something they need help with.

I've carried two different Leatherman's for the past 15  years.  And by carry I mean on my hip 5 days a week used every day at work and sometimes on the weekends. While the Wave is nice, I like the larger size of the Core that I currently use.

been carrying the same leatherman wave for the past 5 years, and I work on the ocean so this thing has spent basically it's entire life in a salty environment and still going strong, just give it a rinse with freshwater and a quick spray of WD-40 every so often and it's happy.

Owned Leathermen, Sog, Gerber, and a couple others (Winchester and the like).
Regardless of the alleged politics of the Leathermen company or founder or whatever, they make the only tools that I carry and use. The others end up in a drawer somewhere.

I have a very early Leatherman Wave (early '98). Carry and use it every day.

I think I have a another big one from someone else floating around here. I think that one pinched me and

so it fell out of favour.

Yep get the SOG with the gear assist. I had a leatherman kick I broke the pliers on it trying to cut barbwire. I then purchased a SOG without the gear assist instead it had a head that you could angle. I lost it in the harvest field this summer running down the furrows trying to get jumper cables. I then recently purchased a Sog with the gear assist on SOC that thing has cut barbwire, stove pipe flashing that is like 20 gauge thick, and just about everything else I could do. Leatherman's are a piece of shit I buy SOG all the way.

I can't say how many times I got pinched by one of those I carried. Same as some offbrand piece of shit. It was always during my gi joe grip that it pinched and I summarily cried like a bitch.

I've used most of them––the Bucktool I had high hopes for, and ended up being the absolute worst.

Yes, it's neat  how the pliers unfold––unfortunately, when applying torque to the more resistant objects, they tend to fold back up.  I gave mine away.

I've  had two types of Gerbers––one was a military-issued version that was essentially a Leatherman copy, the other was the "slide-lock" pliers that I absolutely detest...Slip on something you're applying pressure to, and you're going to earn yourself (at minimum!) a good pinching.  The last time I  used one I got a decent month-long blood-blister.  I put that one in my kid's BOB.

Used the original Leatherman for years...it was a decent tool, with one exception...one of the things I didn't like about the Leatherman was the way the original handles would cut into your skin if you had to apply force to the pliers.

If you haven't tried a Leatherman in a while, give the Wave a try.  It addressed that issue, and is made in a very intelligent design, with a decent knife blade (not a compromise blade) and good tools.  Of all that I've used (and I'm a tinkerer!), the Wave is by far the best I've seen to date.
