I went to the doctor last week and I didn't like what she had to say.
Ever since then, I've taken a hard look at my diet and drastically changed it to more like how I used to eat. I dug my steamer out of the back of the cabinet and have been using it a lot. Baking a lot of chicken. Beans and brown rice have become a staple again. I woke up today and realized I feel fan-fucking-tastic and it's been only about a week. I've been sleeping better. I'm able to exercise more. Jeans are requiring a belt where it used to be optional. All those excuses about how it's time-consuming and expensive to eat healthy foods are bullshit. The most anything takes to cook is 45 minutes and only a few minutes of that is prep work. The rest is spent doing whatever else I want, maybe watching TV, maybe surfing arfcom. I swear I'm not one of those holier-than-thou assholes, but seriously guys take a look at your diets. |

I honestly enjoy cooking. I have found that my wife and I will spend ~12-1300 dollars a month eating out and around 400 bucks a month if I cook every night (this price also includes an extra portion for lunch).
Eating right is not time consuming, expensive or a pain in the ass. I stopped cooking from boxes, bags and cans a looooong time ago. My cholesterol and my general practitioner agree, it's a good idea. Plus, you're right, if I go on a "eat out for a week" bender I feel like shit for a week afterward. |

Holy crap That's not a typo, I've done the math. If we're eating out, it usually ain't McD's or Carl's Jr. |

What did your diet consist of before? Way too much fast food/pizza. I'd be tired so I wouldn't get up before work to cook food. At work, I'd eat relatively crappy food. Then I'd go home and be too tired to cook so I'd get take out and then go to bed. Repeat. To be honest, I'm not even sure when I got into those awful eating habits. Seems like it just happened one day. I used to eat healthy foods all the time when I was running more and then one day, bam. |

Eating 'food' is better than anything in a can. My wife and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Great way to bond and you get to eat when you are done. |

Take it to the next level
I'll try not to get preachy in this thread, but what most people think is healthy, isnt. I went primal about three weeks ago, and the results are just simply amazing. |

How can whole foods, cooked from scratch, not be healthy? Cooking from scratch is healthier than prepackaged food with preservatives etc etc.. But grains (wheat, corn), and low fat seed oils (canola) are not healthy. Read up on primal or paleo living. Its honestly changed my life in just a few weeks. My adult acne is gone. I have a ton of energy. And most importantly, symptoms of the UC Ive been living with for 15 years are gone. ETA- And saturated fats, in the absence of carbs, are not going to make you fat or cause heart disease. Our bodies are designed to burn fat for energy, not carbs. |

I like healthier food much better than fast food. I still eat fast food on occasion but it makes me feel like shit.. I would like to get down to eating meat only once a day and mostly chicken breast. Had ravioli with chicken and cheese and tomato sauce tonight. We have been buying veggie trays and setting them out. Keeps you from eating so much since you feel up on raw veggies. |

How can whole foods, cooked from scratch, not be healthy? you're fine. lot of paleo/primal guys hang out in the self defense forum. i've skimmed mark sisson's book, and it in large part seems to be atkins re-hashed with the cool catch words and phrases of today. one of the paleo guys (can't recall who at the moment) had a thread a while back where he tracked his cholesterol for about 4-6 weeks, while eating about a lb of meat a day. he went from 200-ish to 280-ish in that amount of time. even the other paleo guys were saying that wasn't good. all things in moderation. too much of anything is bad for you. edit: heh: So, grains, the thing that men have been eating since time immemorial, the staff of life, are unhealthy. looks like you have some of my same opinions. |

I simply disagree with your assessment of nutritional "value" as it pertains to the human diet. By the way, hundreds of years may be "recently" given the time line of humanity but, I'd suspect it's enough time to gauge the actual danger. |

Cup of coffee and a pastry/bagel on the way to work - $5 Fast food or quick restaurant for lunch - $10 Take out Chinese/pizza or restaurant for dinner - $10 That's $50 a day for two people, without even working hard to do it. Even at only five days a week (we'll asume you fast on weekends ) that's $1,000/month. |

Every Sunday me and the wife prepare our weeks meals while watching football.
I smoke meat (chicken, pork salmon etc.) She chops up vegetables for salad. Maybe make a soup or chili. Have fruits at hand. The rest of the week just toss meat in the micro or put salads or fruit in a bowl. I've lost 76lbs and she has lost 37lbs in the last year and a half. Being a grandpa and grandma we never felt better. GM |
