I agree, the Acer Tablets are hard to beat for features and price.

On the flip side,   Samsung has a new 11.6" inch tablet (Slate 7) that runs Windows 7, has a Core i5, 4gb and 128gb SSD, with a dock and bluetooth keyboard for $1,300.

Either get the iPad or don't get it.
You could probably find a 1st Gen iPad for $350 or so.Personally at this stage in the game if I was going to spend that much I'd just go ahead with the iPad2 or wait till the iPad3 is released
ETA or go with a refurb ipad2

All the 10 inch tablets are essentially the same.  1GB ram, dual core processor....16 or 32GB SSD.  $299 or around there.

The Acer Iconia is one of the few that actually has a real full-sized USB port that you can plug stuff into like external drives, jump drives, modems, etc. It has that port in addition to the micro-USB that can be used to tether to a PC or whatnot.

I've found it to be a lot more useful than I originally expected. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to do much with it when I bought it. So far, it's worked fantastic! The only thing that I've had issues with is looking at office-like docs. At some point they'll be a good Android app for that but it's not there yet for all of the msoffice stuff (particularly powerpoint).

I also like having the same OS and processor on both my tablet and my phone (Droid Bionic).

I got the Asus Transformer a few months ago. I think this thing is great! It's not a laptop, and if you need productivity, this might not be your best bet. As a media consumption and entertainment device, it kicks ass! I bought to surf teh interwebz, play some games, watch video and handle email. It handles all that with aplomb in a form more comfortable to me than a laptop. Plug in the keyboard and it's almost as good as a netbook.

Bought my son a Toshiba Thrive.  It was dead right out of the box.  Took it back, the second one died a week later.  Took it back and bought a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.  Loved it so much we went back and bought a 2nd one for me.  We have had them for several months now and no problems at all.

I'm in the same boat.  Ipads are cute, but I'm not going to spend $500 on something that amounts to nothing more than a toy that can't do anything that my phone doesn't already do.  If I were spending that kind of cash, I'd buy another laptop.

I tried to get one of the refurb $99 HP touchpads off the ebay firesale last weekend, but no dice.  The sale crashed ebay.

10" Toshiba Thrive for me and a 7" Kindle Fire for her.
There's something to be said for the ability to plug in a USB drive, micro USB or just an SD card to expand memory or move files.

HDMI helps with presentations at work too.
The Toshiba was for my wife initially, but she only used it for Angry Birds, ebooks and Netflix.

A Fire fits her needs better, she loves it.

ETA: If I was going to get anything else, it would probably be an Acer Iconia A100.  Probably gonna get it for my next deployment.

work bought me a thrive wife had to have one too so i bought her one about 2 weeks later. She LOVES it. it goes with her everywhere. that said thrives did have some massive growing pains when the came out. good news is it was all firmware fixes and all of them are fixed now. mine was great out of the box hers had every problem reported. toshiba was good to work with and their forums are great.

everyone else in our office got the samsung galaxy tabs. they also had a few annoying issues at first but they are also great tablets now. I chose the thrive for the replaceable battery and full size ports. the extra thickness is also easier for me to hold. weight is about the same.

one thing i have found with these tablets is they all pretty much run the same. your paying extra for brand and available accessories. i really think the extra or full sized ports are a must have on these for anything really usable.

"Marketed their way"?  How about "created the genre"?

Before iPhone, the "smartphone" was a Blackberry. The iPhone created an entire new animal that became hugely popular, and that others quickly tried to copy.

Before the iPad, there was.... what? The iPad created an entire new animal that became hugely popular, and that others quickly tried to copy.

It seems more like other manufacturers are trying to "market their way" into relevance.

They aren't iPads, but IMHO, the 7" form factor is superior, and it's 80% the machine for 40% the cost.

Lord. Apple fanboys.
It used a stylus. And ran the full-featured OS everyone was already familiar with. The size was dictated by the state of battery tech and the display. And there were predecessors to that way back in the 90's.
Even the HP Touchpad supports Flash. The Ipad is an overpriced, underperforming turd.

I had a Newton. It never did learn my handwriting. As far as usefulness went, it was an overgrown Alphanumeric pager.

I run CM7 on my phone and NC, and while it's easy for me, I just go ahead and do backups/flash roms/etc. on my wife's phone rather than try to explain it.

I have an iPod Touch that works seamlessly, Android is awesome but if you go custom you have to deal with some bugs. I'm about to re-flash my phone because of market problems.

So for a wife asking for an iPad 2, I'd say iPad 2.
