Would you have liked to receive something like this as a graduation present?

Looks like a nice desk toy.  But I'd rather get:

Noted. I'll add that to the list of potential gifts. However, I'm the "cool" uncle and therefore I get the nifty but impractical items. Grandpa can get the book.

I have ALWAYS wanted one of those, but could never convince myself to spend the money.

I have the handbook, but don't think I've ever gotten any use out of it.

Not an ME but I work with them alot....That would be very cool.

Get him a Saddleback Leather Company Briefcase.  He will have it and use it the rest of his life, far more than some toy he'll use a few times and never tough again.  It's expensive at 5-600 bucks, but worth every penny.

A useless fapping machine.  Nice.

I haven't carried a briefcase in over 20 years, and don't know any other engineers who do either.

If anything, I use my laptop bag.

I would personally rather have a gun (ie Glock) and I am a ME as well.

I have never been gifted a gun before except for the two hand me downs from my grandfathers.  I would be ecstatic if someone gave me a gun as a present.

only if you made it - or at least replaced the absolutely hideous base.

Did you look at it?  It
s a leather top loading briefcase that can double as a laptop bag.  It's even better in person than the pictures.

If I ever had kids, I would fully expect them to fight for it when I died, it's that good.

Nice briefcase. I'll put it on the list of potential items.

(I want one for myself now.)

I'll get him a gun when he moves out of his parent's place permanently. His mom would stroke out if I got him one before then. (Not that that would be a totally bad thing.)

We go to the range when he visits and he likes shooting. I'll probably gift him something out of my collection when the time is right. (I've got a G17 I don't do much with anymore. )

Heck yes, get him an engine model, he probably has never heard of a flame licker.

Stirling engines -

http://www.garrettwade.com/classic-precision-stirling-engine/p/60M03.01/

The second ones are available as a ready to assemble kit.

They have those models on the same site as the one I found the model in the initial post. They are all cool, but I was leaning toward the Flame Eater because it looks like a Spiff Spaceman raygun and it will probably tick his mom off some. That, and we enjoy shooting together when the opportunity presents itself.

Very intriguing and I like my nephew, but not as much as they want for those.

I had thought about getting him an old school slide-rule.

If he doesn't already have a copy, the Machinery's Handbook would make an excellent reference book to have.

I get the impression that a lot of people aren't grasping the "cool uncle" concept here.

The engine produces very little useable power but does make a splendid noise

Awesome.

ETA:  That whole site is awesome.  Oh man...<<fapfapfapfapfapfapfap>>

Cool uncle is nice, but getting him something that will be fun to play with for about ten minutes and then end up collecting dust somewhere is kind of a waste.  Get him something that he can use.

That's what we always tell them when he and his sister tell us what they want for Christmas or birthdays. "You want what? Well, now what am I going to do with this gross of rainbow toe socks?"

What do they plan on doing after graduation?

If they are going to be working in an office environment - a nice watch

If they are going to be on a production floor alot - precision measuring devices? tools? a gun?

Bump for the MEs that had to work today.
