So I was Black Friday shopping at a very popular local gun store early this morning before work...  Went in to fill out some paperwork for 2 transfers from PSA, and to buy some .45 ammo.  Well, I got done filling out the paperwork, and I ask the guy how much a case of .45 was going for with the sale, which was $200 something, I can't remember.  I had just spent $90 for two fucking transfers, nearly what I paid for the two lowers themselves, so I decided to go with just half a case.  He brings out the ammo, rings me up for that and the transfers, and I rush out the door because I'm almost late for work.  Anyways, get home tonight and look at the case and it says 500 rounds, look at the receipt, and it says 250 rounds.  Paid $118.77 + $90 transfer fee for a total of $227.77 after taxes.  So basically, I just got a free half case of ammo?  Now, I'm left wondering, should I keep it for getting hosed on transfer fees, or should I do the moral thing and return the other half case?

Poll inbound.

TLDR:  Black Friday, $45 transfer fees x 2, unintentional free half case of .45.  Return, yes or no?

Where I come from half a case is 500 rounds.

And who the hell pays $45 per transfer in AZ?

I would keep it and I have one of the worst conscience's around.  You'll forget about it eventually.  It wasn't your fault.  If you had noticed when it happened and still walked out, that would be a different story.

I know...  I was thinking a case was 1000 rounds too, that's why I didn't notice it at the store.  But indeed I got 500 rounds in a case, and paid for 250.

And evidently, this guy does

The right thing is often just the thing you would rather not do. You know what you should do, you don't need us to tell you.

In before the "what you did is no different than stealing,"  "one more person to not deal with in the EE," "blah blah blah, yapp yapp, blah blah, herp de durr."

Personally, I'd return and make it right.  Probably because the two places I shop at are places I visit frequently.

Eta:  FWIW, if you honestly didn't notice until you got home then it's whatever.  Gas to/from home and time spent on this count for something, and you weren't the one that made the mistake.

$90 for two transfers? I wonder if the FFL has a conscience. That would explain your 50% off .45 ammo.

These things can come back to haunt you.

Do the right thing.

Then go find another FFL that doesn't charge an arm and leg for a transfer.

You have Jesus in your Avatar.Do you believe that getting double what you paid for, even though it's the mistake of the store is right. If you turned around and sold that ammo tomorrow, and gave a guy a price, and the same thing happened to you, even though you made the mistake, how would you feel? If the guy in your avatar means something to you, you already feel in your gut what the answer is. He is your moral compass.

The overly expensive transfers is totally separate from this issue. Your brain is telling you that you need to include that in your decision, but that is moral relativism.

As of this time only 50% say be honest. I suppose that indicates that about 1/2 of the people on this site are honest. Well that's likely better than average.

I'd return it.  Especially since it sounds like a small locally owned place and not a huge chain.  I go out of my way to support those stores.

You knew what the transfers cost before you agreed to have them done.  So tough shit about that.

This is a satellite location, but their home store has the largest indoor gun range in the country.  Not exactly small...

And I agree with the part in bold.

I've been on a good deeds kick lately...  Stopped and pushed a lady's car 2 blocks after it ran out of gas...  Gave another older lady a ride from a gas station to a bus stop 20 blocks away, despite running late for work.  Helped another lady carry some groceries to her car...

You guys sure this isn't my pay forward?

I don't think they can legally take the ammo back and resell it. Even if they can, it's probably not a good idea (liability).

Either return the overage or send a check to pay for the overage. Had something similar happen to me recently but for a lesser amount (only $15). I sent the LGS a check in the mail and included a copy of the receipt and a check to cover what I had actually received. The LGS may not have given a carp about a measly $15 but I know that I did what I thought was the right thing to do.

Of course you should return it or pay for it. What kind of a choice is it ?

And why pay 45 for transfers ? Way too much, there is bound to be better deals out there.

I see nothing illegal about it. Because of liability they might not.

But that could work for you. if you attempt to return it and they tell you keep it, you win.

I had a similar situation once.  A gun store I used to frequent would have a bargain table once a year with some really good deals.  One year they had a nice WW2 issue 1911 holster for $5.00.  I bought that holster and a few other items.  I went to pay for my things and left the store.  Later that evening I got home and happened to look over the receipt and noticed I wasn't charged for the holster.  It didn't seem like a big deal seeing as that the holster was only five bucks, but that store had always been good to me so I decided to go back to the store with the holster and the receipt to pay for it.  When I went back to the store the clerk got all huffy when I pointed out their mistake and offered to pay for the holster.

I learned a lesson that day and a few more times since then, even doing the right thing will get you fucked in the end.  The way I see it now is if a store screws up something minor, its their mistake and I sure as hell won't try to make it right because its a waste of time to even make it right.

In the OP's case though, I'd say take the ammo back, who knows you may get hooked up for your trouble.

This is what I had originally planned on doing, and will do on Monday.  It's highly unlikely that they could accept it back, but I'd imagine they would let me keep it anyways...  I was just curious what the hive would advise me to do.

Like I mentioned, I've been on a good deeds kick as of late and it feels fuckin good...  so far indirectly, it's gotten me a huge promotion at work, a couple very nice potential dates, AND possibly a free half (quarter??) case of ammo.

A good moral compass is never a bad thing to have....  cause well, you can run on for a long time....

That is the store's fault, not to mention they bent you over the table and ran train on your wallet for the transfers, good god man.

They should have had the correct amount of product rung up on the register, but if you want to return it good on you

$45 per transfer...FUCK!!!

He must not want you to come back....ever.

As I see it, you got the transfers for free since they screwed up the ammo price. If you feel guilty, send the guy a twenty in the mail. That's the going rate around here for transfers.

It actually won't cause him any trouble unless he's a habitual screw up.  At most the loss prevention people in the store will just tell him to be more careful.

I worked retail loss prevention, shit like this happens all the time.  When people bring it back no one got in any trouble.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  That ammo is their payment for not wasting your gas and time fixing their mistake.  If it was 1000 rounds extra or something maybe I would feel bad keeping it but 250 is only an hour worth of shooting.

I don't like the guys behind the counter there.  Didn't seem at all enthused to help me, nor did one of the guys have a clue what the fuck it was that he was talking about.

I shoot there, but that's only because it's the closest indoor range around, but I don't have a membership.  Once SGC builds their facility next year, I'll be going there.  All indoors, 12 100 yard lanes, 32 25 yard lanes, and 12 15 yard lanes...  Should be amazing.
