[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Marine basic training going soft? (Page 1 of 4)

I had a former student come visit today and he just finished boot camp in Pendleton. Earned his Eagle, globe and anchor, Nov. 10th. Anniversary of Marine corps.
Anyways, he said the drill instructors were not very angry, at most they ran 3 miles and the crucible was "fun." How lax has the corps been in the past 30 years? I went to a workshop at Pendleton 3 years ago and got to step on the yellow steps and get yelled at. But according to this student, it was much easier than he expected. Any Marines want to chime in? Both old and young. |

My DI's sure were pissed off. My senior drill instructor was suffering from severe PTSD along with marital issues. My killhat was just the biggest fucking dick in the world(to this day I hate him..HATE him, I don't give a shit if he was just doing his job), my "J" Hat or whatever the fuck he's called was actually a bit of a pussy but he tried to overcompensate for it by being a total cocksucker, and my drill hat was turning alcoholic and would frequently come to the bay drunk at all hours of the night and wake us all up to do god knows what till morning.
No, it was not fun, yes, they were mean. |

My dad went through Parris Island as well in 81...pretty much the same shit Either that or he was first BN ETA: Oh, just noticed you said San Diego........theres your answer

sometimes a platoon will get lucky and they wont have sadistic mother fuckers as DI's. thats about it.. That makes sense. So, it can be varied that much? Oh yeah... you'd see some platoons and think "Man if I had it that good I couldn't even consider myself a Marine after this.." There were some platoons/companies at MCRD that were especially brutal. I got lucky enough to get stuck with one of the worst. Luckily I stayed under the wire for most of Boot Camp. |

Quoted: Mine were fuckers! EAT: All four of them I was out in Hollywood the same time...well the summer. Our two heavies were absolute SOB's. Our Senior, he was good to go...until we fucked up and that black belt came off...off to the pit to make it rain. We came back from the gas chamber, all the showers were on full hot..filled with steam, we took off our cammies in the shower and then he has us shake them in the air. Gas Chamber, part deux. |

Most likely boot Marine bullshit to show how tough he is now. It ain't any easier than it was when I went through 34 years ago. I've known this former student for 3 years, he's not the bragging type. Maybe he just got lucky. He's a Marine now. He gets to be a bragging type. |

WTF are you trying to say? You went to a "workshop" at Camp Pendleton and stepped on the yellow footprints there?
Oh, btw, MCRD San Diego here - Platoon 3058 - 1978... |

I had been through 4 years of military college and USMC OCS before I went..... parts sucked but, overall enjoyed it

You know, I honestly thinks one's perception of Boot Camp depends on your attitude. I wanted to be there so badly that I didn't think it was all that challenging at all. For me, the P.T. part was easy. My Drill Instructors left me alone for the most part except for the obligatory fucking with part, but I did my thing and showed enthusiasm so it wasn't that bad.
That's not to say I didn't push for eternity when it came time to be fucked with, though. We all did. Again: Plt. 3067 "L" Co., 3rd RTBN MCRD San Diego 28 Sept. 1984 |
|
Everybody who went to bootcamp after me had it easy. Every Marine knows that it just keeps getting easier. I've heard that in a couple of years, Marine bootcamp will consist of a facebook chain letter. Pass it on, and you are a Marine.
Edit; Just so all of you sissies can measure how easy you had it, 1982 for me. |
| I almost lost my left leg due to a DI beating the shit out of me. No kidding. They thought I had compartment syndrome and were going to have to cut if off. Luckily, wasn't the case. My left leg turned black from hip to toe though for two months. Spent 3 extra months at boot. When I was hobbling up the stairs, prior to it turning black, they pushed me back down them because I couldn't keep up. My left leg was a full two inches longer than my right, approx one day after the event. Back into training, received a black eye from having an A2 birdcage jammed into it. I was one of the motivated recruits as well, squad leader, meritoriously promoted out of boot camp. That was back in '02. So yeah, I'd say it still can be pretty demanding. |
|
Quoted: I like to call Marines Soldiers and then watch them get all butthurt and say they are Marines not Soldiers. Ha, ha. Let's see the shit storm before someone reads up on history. we are Soldiers..... but we have the TITLE of United States Marine almost like me saying "that person is a human" rather than a "man" or "woman" and in before some dumbass pulls up the "Soldiers of the sea" poster |

I will say this: I know the Senior Drill Instructor in the film linked above (I've stated as much several times before in these threads). He had to tone it down for the cameras, if that tells you anything.
Whatever the Drill Instructors at the Depot's are doing they must be doing it right, because the USMC is still kicking ass wherever they show up to fight. If you really want to see a "hat" respond to a statement about how deficient initial training in the Marine Corps is, tell him he can't train recruits, and that his platoon is "soft". Go ahead, say it to his face....

I was "accidentally" kicked in the face at Edson Range and got a split bottom lip that needed stitches ...Semper Fi! |

Op, not to sound like a dick (even though I kind of am), but it's hard to take your post seriously while your avatar pic has you sucking face with some chick trying to question Marines how "hard" they are as a result of their training. I just want to cast you in a sequel to "From Here To Eternity". OTOH, I think it's great that you promote heterosexuality (as in, you're not sucking face with a male), especially in the post-DADT era. Keep up the good work. |
